A cruise in Alaska.

A bridge story. It was time for the old bridge built in 1954 to be replaced. So for a year and a half, many skilled men and women worked this crane and other large machinery to erect a new bridge alongside the old bridge.

After considerable work, it was time; the new bridge was almost ready; the old bridge had to be deconstructed. The scrap was put to good use. Large scows transported it to its new home in the middle of the river to become a reef to support fish, oysters, clams, and other wildlife. Finally the big crane was the last to depart as its job was done.

I think this is Throgs Neck Bridge on the East River. Taken from the plane as we approached LaGuardia.

Nice shot of the bridge. I travelled it many times to Jones Beach and later to Westchester to visit my family after I moved to Long Island as a newlywed.

Thanks, happy2b...gw! I have more bridge pictures from that trip. I’ll wait for the roadway/bridge day to post them, tho.
