window dilemma - mudroom new built

Does anyone have any idea how much a 20x40 transom window costs?!

Our funky new build comes with ONE transom window in the mudroom.
So questions - window in the mudroom - nice source of light or privacy invasion (its horizontal I wouldn’t even know how to cover is) since it basically lets everyone in the neighborhood know when you’re rummaging through the mudroom
Do I keep it, toss it, move it to the middle ($100 charge only) or add one more for symmetry?

Ceilings are ten feet the windows are high and would not get in the way of decor or cabinets but would make treatments hard to adjust

Just a lack of privacy is my concern

A "transom" window is above a door. Perhaps this is an "awning" window. What is the height from the floor?

Was this a laundry and now just a mudroom/vestibule? If the washer and dryer remain 24" is not deep enough.

I'm curious why privacy would be a concern if its now a mudroom.

Based on the plan calling it a transom I'm guessing it is a window that is high off the floor and not something that would allow people to see in. Not sure what your privacy concern is with that. It would let in light and you can't see out and others can't see in unless they are on higher ground than the window.

When the light is on it will be visible no matter the window treatment unless you go for full world war blackout treatments.

Amielynn: First of all, a huge thank you to you and your husband for your service!! I hope his disability doesn't prevent him from enjoying his life and family. My DH retired in 1985 (yup! we're old), so I know all the struggles of military life you've been through. He was a pilot in Viet Nam, shot down, but no permanent disability. He did go through prostate cancer treatments (agent orange). Now to your windows. My biggest advice if this is your long term home, is to not rush into anything. I like the idea of those temporary shades in areas where you need privacy .. bedrooms and baths. I had Sherwood Shutters in a previous home, and loved them. They were so much better made than the ones in the store. They were like a piece of furniture. We did the entire house, a little at a time. A lot easier to clean than wood blinds, although I love wood blinds, too. I liked the fact that the entire shutter could be opened all the way when I chose. Good luck in your new home! I don't see a good place to fold in there. It looks really tight. I don't even see a place where you could pull out a hidden folding surface. Annette, a flipfold is not the same as a folding table. It is a plastic thingy they sell at Container Store that makes it fast to fold shirts and towels and some other things. They use them in clothing stores. It totally changed my dread of folding things. As I mentioned before, I use the kitchen counter which for me is a perfect height. Folding on the bed would hurt my back. I would try to find some kind of folding table for the DH, but I don't see where you could put it in that room based on the washer-dryer discussion. I might look for a place to fold in a different room, and make it counter height. Maybe a room with a view. :-) The flipfold makes it super fast - I would get through a load/basket full in maybe ten minutes: dump, sort and flipfold. My kitchen counter peninsula is 2' x 8', so there is plenty of room for sorting multiple loads. But if you fold one load at a time, it can be finished in minutes and you don't need as much room. Another thought is to have some kind of step up surface to raise your height so that it is comfortable to fold on the elevated countertop. That does not sound too safe: you don't want your head to hit the ceiling and you don't want to accidentally step off the step. I have been painting a lot lately and the little rubbermaid stepstool is used constantly. However I have to stand in one place, so I don't know if that would work for folding laundry. I would do it in a different room where I could move more freely. Unless... you could construct something safe that pulls out from under the machines and extends the length and has its own support underneath... IDK, it's a stretch.

Thanks Patricia for taking the time to read my post! I agree with the built-in banquette seating. My finance is pretty convinced that it's a great idea for big family dinners (which is funny since most meals we eat out OR eat in front of the TV since we live in a condo and it's only the 3 of us). As for the pictures, I took these with a wide angle lens, which unfortunately distorts the edges of the pictures (ie like a fisheye lens, but less severe). I took them like this to fit more of the room into a single snap shot. While the drawing isn't 100% to scale, it, for the most part it shows the correct scaling of the walls, nooks and crannies. We're mostly hoping to have general furniture layout suggestions to keep the room looking not awkward, with clean sight lines from walking up the stairs, out the patio and from the kitchen (far screen left in the diagram; it's cut off, but will be a full kitchen that has a pony-wall overlooking the stairs).

You can do either, but if you're already worried about it being dark maybe go for a painted option. If you paint it, I suggest painting it the same color as the wall. If you do the stain, have him do a sample before so you can compare it to the trim before committing. You may find it doesn't match well enough and you don't like it. But instead of shelves maybe move the TV off of the fireplace. It seems like it's small enough to fit int he nook. It's placement is really ruining the Victorian look more than anything else. If you're looking to brighten things up maybe go for a warm white rather than yellow, which can be tricky to work with.

Is the window located to the left because of the exterior? If it is in the middle of the room, how does that affect the exterior?

If the exterior calls for the window to be where shown, then the door serves as a good privacy screen: it will typically be open when you area engaging around in there.

As far as the interior goes, in the middle would be nice so the open door doesn't block the light. If you are concerned about overly-nosy neighbors, who would have to make a real effort to see into the mudroom, frost the glass.

IMO neighbors probably have better things to do than wait for you to rummage in the mud room as for the window I really have no idea without seeing the exterior plan and get motorized blinds if this is abig deal for you.

The window seems pretty lopsided and useless? Should I just ditch it in favor of canned lighting or lanterns in the mudroom?

I wouldn't give up the possibility of natural light in a mudroom. In a closet, yes. In a mudroom, no. Are blinds not an option for some reason?

I love my natural light in the laundry room - it helps the black socks not get combined with the blue socks.

It's not the nicest place in the house and laundry sucks, so why make it suck more by eliminating natural light?

Always go with natural light when you can... I think it will be high enough ( check your blue prints ) that privacy should not be an issue unless your neighbor is up higher than you.
