Building a mudroom in the garage?
Comments (16)Oh shoes and kids! Our 13 y.o. son plays baseball, basketball, and football and our 15 y.o. daughter plays tennis. Between them, DH and I you'd think we had 20 people living in this house just based on the shoes! I vote a big yes for the lockers in your garage. We have a small stretch of hooks, bench, baskets below and shelves above. I'd love it to be twice as big! Can you post a layout of your floor plan including the garage? Maybe someone can come up with a clever way to incorporate the mudroom as it's own space. Otherwise love the doors on the lockers idea. Below is a picture of part of our mudroom (W/D and sink are behind the wall with the bulletin board.) Where the shoes and boots are at the bottom, we have removed those shelves and put baskets with lids there. (Because when the dog was a puppy he would chew on the shoes.) Now I really wish we had made those drawers. For us, baskets are just too much of a pain to pull out and take the lid off so the shoes in there are kind of forgotten about. I know that sounds lazy but when you're running out of the house it's nice to have quick access. Ideally the bench would be higher and we'd have tall drawers with removable plastic liners so we could clean up after mucky boots and shoes. And I'd like a bigger spot for storing gear (balls, bats, pads, etc.) We have one of those wheeled basket things to the right of what's visible below, but you have to dig in it to get what you want. In your garage, you could set up some of those ball claws, etc. (Our garage is detached so not as handy for that.)...See MoreIs it a bad idea to put a laundry room upstairs in new build?
Comments (17)I think an ideal place for a washer/dryer is close to the bedrooms and bathrooms -its much more time efficient. The majority of your laundry goes to the bedrooms and bathrooms. As you age, its also easier on the arms and legs. Since you are building a new home, why not put a a washer/dryer behind closed doors in a kids bathroom? If you are worried about noise, put a small inexpensive stacked unit there for small kids loads - leave space to later put a full size unit in if you decide you like the set up. Build a normal laundry room in the basement. If you hate the laundry upstairs - you can turn that space into storage - no mater how much we have we always need more storage. If you love the upstairs laundry - then you can bring your larger machines upstairs and the smaller ones downstairs. I think if you can give yourself options you will be happier in the long run. Its harder to change things once they are built. Take precautions and install the recommended floor drain. If you don't want to purchase two washer /dryers start them upstairs and be prepared to move them if you are unhappy into a space downstairs that is already set up. Having the washer/dryer near where your clothes and towels are stored will make your life so much easier IMHO....See MoreLaundry room design help for new build
Comments (5)The plan you have right now is fine but realize that if you ever go to a washer FL you will need to switch the washer and dryer. While most dryer doors can switch to hinge on either the left or right (but be sure to check your machine), no FL washer can be hinged on the right. Only the left. Ditch the door from the pantry. Remember the pantry is smaller now. You don't want to give up another 30" for a door. I might consider flipping the laundry room and the closet outside of it. Why? I'm not sure you'll want your plumbing in the same wall that backs your pantry?...See MoreNew Craftsman Kitchen/Bath, Mudroom/Butler Pantry, Bath/Laundry, Floor
Comments (0)The stone craftsman bungalow at the top of Wright Hill was built as a summer home in 1911. Our renovation converted a first floor bedroom and hallway into a new kitchen and adjoining office, remodeled the original kitchen into a storage/mudroom and butler's pantry, and upgraded the bathroom and adjoining laundry room. https://www.houzz.com/ideabooks/83941792/thumbs/new-craftsman-kitchen-bath-mudroom-butler-pantry-bath-laundry-floors...See MoreAnnette Holbrook(z7a)
