Moved to a house with this tree, what tree is this

Hello. Trying to find what tree this is.

I am in South Florida. This tree has little baby tree growths coming from the ground. I think they pop up from the roots of the main tree. The tree has a bark that looks like it peels. I notice also when I break off some leaves from the branches it has a very fragrant aroma that reminds me of lemon. Sometimes there are some berry looking things and then small flower (bees love this tree when it flowers and also the Pink Powder Puff Shrub that is next to it). Hopefully the pictures I attach can help.

I am getting very annoyed with keeping the ground beneath the tree clean with all those baby growths coming up. Plus need to confirm if the roots are invasive.

whats under the black band ... and what is the stick for ... i hesitate to even call it a stake ...

i ask.. because im wondering about severe injury.. and whether the tree is worth keeping.. regardless of what it is ...

severe wound.. might be a reason.. the tree is trying to survive by sending up multiple..new shoots from below ...

I believe the stake was to keep the tree upright since it was probably planted recently within 2 to 3 years. I have removed this stake already. The picture was taken months before. I need to remove the band and see what is beneath it. I personally want to remove the tree and don't are for it. But still curious what tree it is.

To me, the bigger question is why is this black walnut seedling the only one? Since you have a tree that produces nuts, I would expect you to be so tired of digging up all the black walnut starts..and for most of the year, since here I notice the new ones spring and summer, but eventually by fall I find the sneaky ones that hid from me earlier in the season. My 'across the street and down one house garden' had one of the largest BW trees around until recently ( many of us are sad it ended up having to go ). Such a beautiful tree. But the darn nuts the squirrels forgot still are a neighborhood pest. This is the third or fourth year post-BW tree and while I'm getting fewer than before, there are still enough I do an eye-roll and a sigh as I go for the spade. Regular weeding tools don't go deep enough, you have to get all the way down to where the nut was planted. If you have whacked at any of these seedlings repeatedly with just a sturdy weeder, the problem only becomes a much bigger project getting rid of monster,, twisted, deep root. The ninebark is a beautiful plant, one you paid good money for and have invested time and effort towards. BW seedlings are a dime a dozen and grow FAST! Personally I would look around a bit more and find a different seedling. If that fails, and you are the tidiest gardener ever, after you come over and help me try to keep up with the garden ;) , you can plant some nuts this fall, then pick the one that is truly outstanding in the group to save for your future tree. Seems like that tree would be the winner in many ways and you can say I started this as a nut ! Be sure to take a picture of the nut for the baby book. Moving Trees (and House) Over Winter

Hey all, just wanted to update and thank everyone again for all the advice. I moved 11 trees and a few shrubs and so far (knock on wood) it looks like we've only lost one! I think the combination of excellent snow cover and solid cold all year and a very slow and late spring helped out. Still getting the last few in the ground, but all are leafing out nicely. Moving them around to the shade side of the garage was also key, thanks for motivating me to do that. That spot (above pic) is such that the morning sun doesn't hit it until maybe mid-March. The snow and ice cover stayed here longer than anywhere else. But once it hit, look out, those plants woke up in a hurry and were raring to get in the ground. The only loss was a pawpaw. It was in the smallest container, and really never looked great even before the move. If I had to lose one, it's the one I'm least bummed about. I am gonna stick it somewhere just in case though. It was also great to have some stuff ready to go, as the neighbors watched me move in and almost immediately start slashing and burning (no one wants to cut down trees to plant more, but we're talking about Norway maples and dead / hollow locusts towering over the garage, so they had to go). Anyway it was good to have sort of a symbolic peace offering that announced I wasn't going to pave the woods in concrete or anything. They still think I'm weird for leaving snags... but I have pileated woodpeckers and flying squirrels and all kinds of cool stuff back here! Over the next several years I'll be further thinning things out and adding other things. Thinking about a nice 'screen' of mountain laurel and rhodies going up the hill here (my yard is on the right, neighbor on the left, road at top of hill in back behind the MOUNTAIN of wood chips). At the top of this hill in the middle it flattens out quite nicely and has a great vantage point. Thinking of something majestic to overlook the yard. Ken - scarlet oak? Planting apple trees and moving other trees around

I understand your love for the oaks and that you want to keep them, so for my money the first picture is a better set up for sun exposure on future apples as all the oak are mainly situated on the north side of any future plantings. If you removed the oak that is to the west it would let in the late afternoon sun as well. In the second picture they would definitely be shaded as they are surrounded by oaks. I cannot tell the scale of your yard so I do not know if the future oak canopy would extend over the entire yard but if not, (and you use the first scenario), you could plant apple trees in the spot that you wanted to move the oak in the second picture. If you look up Kuffle Creek they have wonderful videos on home orchards which also includes a method of planting more than one apple tree in a hole so you can enjoy many types of apples that ripen at different times in a small space. The video on keeping a standard apple tree dwarf ( so you can put more trees in) is also worth watching.

Same kind might be on display - with labeling - in a public planting (arboretum, botanic garden, college campus, demonstration garden) or nursery in your area.

@embothrium I have been to numerous nurseries in my area. Also I have observed many yards in my community. It seems I must have an uncommon tree planted in my yard. I have tried app that can recognize plants off of pictures and the closest thing I can match it with is a variety of an Ilex (holly). But so many varieties each have there own unique leaf shape.

It looks like something akin to Psidium cattleyanum, Strawberry Guava. Eugenia? Something in the Myrtaceae I’d say anyway. It isn’t any kind of Ilex.

It does not look like a happy tree, whatever it is.

Cool plant! This article is much more enthusiastic about what a great plant it is -- it mentions its exfoliating bark... and it's on the threatened species list. :( I hope you'll keep it or some of its offspring.

I removed the black wrapping. You can see the orangey color in the bark. Took this picture yesterday while I was cutting the grass.
