1970s split level basement remodel

I have my first home that I am looking to update. There has only been one owner prior, so there is a lot of updating to do, and I am learning along the way how to do home improvements:) so I am a beginner here.
The downstairs level is finished, has a wetbar, as well as additional space in the room we want to set up some couches to lounge.
The thing is, I HATE these pieces of diagonal wood paneling on the walls down here. I’m not sure why they are there (is it for looks? Because I mean...it’s horrific) and I hate the gaps between them that show a ton because they painted the boards white. Does anyone know if it would be a cheap easy fix to get rid of and replace? Behind them is concrete.

Thank you,
