Measure the actual available space beginning with the width between the front hinges and create a "box" the available depth and open only in front that you can literally set inside that space and pull out whole that provides the storage you need.

An alternate solution (that would be my personal preference), space permitting, would be to create a rolling cart to hold the containers for your trash and recycle items.

The installation manual for your cooktop or one on A J Madison's site for a current model from the same manufacturer will call out the dimension for clearance necessary.

Is that a telescoping downdraft behind the cooktop? We once had to have our telescoping downdraft repaired and *everything* under the cooktop had to come out so it could be accessed. That would be my only reservation with installing the hardware for a pull-out trash can.

You need an entire new layout in the remodel, so start planning that, and get a better spot for the trash than under the burn hazard with terrible venting.

Thank you all! @dan1888 that’s a great idea to look for a manual online. I will do that. @cavimum it is a telescoping downdraft, I see your point on needing access for repairs! @juneknow there is no remodel being planned, I was simply asking if this was a hazard to put my trash in this location.

IMO a small trash container under the sink is still better You need a trash can where you produce the trash and that is not under the cooktop. I have never needed anything bigger than a small trash can since I take trash out daily and have recyling bins in my laundry roo mand a compost bin on the counter that is a nice stainless container . So there is IMO no need for huge trash containers since you should have very little real trash.

I think there is hardware available for DIY installing a pullout trash can under the kitchen sink. My very handy brother-in-law did that in their kitchen.

For 18 years, we kept our trash can under the kitchen sink. Not a pull-out, It was the size of a good old paper grocery bag, which is exactly what we used to line it. When we did a complete gut & remodel, we gave up some undercounter cabinet space for larger pull-out trash & recycling space in the new cabinets. Even eight years later, I sometimes go to toss out something under the kitchen sink. ;-p

Breaking 18 years of an old habit can be difficult. LOL

If you’re worried about fire hazard, the trash pullout could be enclosed in a metal housing with a self-closing lid. I’d also recommend a foot pedal for hands-free operation.

Its not a fire hazard. They don't get that hot. Air circulation is the more important thing, since the unit will suck air from that space and send it into your kitchen.

It’s not a fire hazard. It’s a burn hazard to anyone attempting to use it. Or walk past the cooktop on the corner with no landing space and pot handles sticking out. The whole cooktop in the island done badly thing is hazardous. Adding trash to it just makes it even more hazardous.

Is that your prep area too? If not, then in addition to all of the above, that’s just not useful. I keep a nice lined garbage bowl in the prep space and remove the garbage to a proper receptacle outside of the kitchen as needed, usually at least once daily.

Yes, it’s dangerous. But not for the reason you’re postulating. That island is a dangerous design.

BTW: I prefer drawers under a cooktop, not trash. I would put drawers here to match the cabinetts.

The induction cook top looks quite dangerous for any cooking on the left side...shouldn't it be centered on the island with landing spots on either side at least one foot wide to follow code.....really wondering here on that.....

I understand everyone’s concerns. It’s not the ideal placement for a cooktop but it’s a beautiful fully functioning kitchen and a renno isn’t in the budget right now. A few years down the line when we are ready to renovate I will certainly look to change the layout!

IMO, because your cooktop is induction, I cannot imagine putting the trash can under it is a fire hazard. We have a shelf under ours, so two layers of storage Under our indication cooktop, along with that rubbery shelf liner under the cookware we store there. In eight years, I have never felt heat under there, because it is induction.
