Pendant light switch on island placement?
Comments (5)Kgolby-we are having a rectangular single level island built. Decided if we are going to do this, we need to do what we hope will function better than this angled island. Still in the planning stages, but so relieved that we decided to "fix" this! Will update as we make progress, but we won't complete this until may or June...lots of "life" going on right now! Good luck!...See MorePull placement on garbage pull out
Comments (16)dd70 Sorry... I didn't see your question until today. This board moves fast! Our trash pullout drawer has an internal drawer box (3/4 inch plywood front panel) which is overlayed with the panel that matches the rest of the cabinets / drawers. The internal box doesn't go all the way up the back of the panel... it stops just below the frame (shaker-style doors). In order to not be wrenching on the frame of the overlay all the time, I had the handle placed a little lower , so it would go through the internal drawer box too. Some may have internal boxes that go nearly all the way up. so they are strong enough to put the pull through just the frame of the panel... I'd have see the inside. Or, conversely, there may not be an internal box at all, but side and bottom glides... it all depends on how the drawer is designed. mysterymachine Does your handle attach through an internal box, or just the frame of the cabinet face?...See MoreTrash. Where is best place for garbage? And how many?
Comments (9)The little compost bins come in all styles - ceramic, metal, etc. Some people just use a large can with lid and park it under the sink (functional, but unattractive). You can get biodegradable bags from your grocery store, Amazon, etc - they hold about 1 gallon, which is about the size of the bin. Every day or two pick up the bag and toss it in your big compost bin that you have outside. The bag will rot in time. Don't put meat scraps in your compost. Egg shells are fine, but they don't decay as well. Coffee grounds are wonderful for your compost and garden - you can actually get them for free at many coffee shops! Anyway - toss dried stuff, like chopped up leaves, etc., in with your food scraps. Smaller stuff is better, of course. Stir the big compost bin once in a while. A good compost pile will NOT stink (contrary to popular belief). You can go crazy with composting - there are even classes that teach you how to do it really well - become a Master Composter!. Or you can take a simple approach, like I've described. This doesn't take much time, of course, but you won't get a fresh batch of really great dirt (finished compost) every 8 weeks, either....See MoreWhere is your pullout garbage?
Comments (28)I was planning on the pull-out b/t my prep and cooking area. HOWEVER, if I go with the 45' Kohler Stages sink, I don't know if I'll have enough space in that area. The area that I would have available for the pullout is farther away from the sink and cook zone. So, my idea is to have a rolling trolley island that will fit under that not-so handy counter -- it would have it's own countertop (?butcher block), will be enclosed, and that's where the pull-out garbage will go. I could pull it out if I needed an island for prepping or for a landing when I'm doing a bunch of baking, and/or pull it where I need to for garbage. If I don't need it, it tucks back under the counter. I'm thinking about making that particular base counter 30' deep, and putting the micro above it. I know that Gene the Cabinet maker will give me a funny look when I describe this to him -- anybody ever do this? Are there flaws in the plan that I don't see? It's basically what I do now, pull the open garbage over to where ever I need it. Here's a picture of what gave me the idea -- I think it could be a Kraftmaid? Here is a link that might be useful:...See MoreNewSouthernBelle
