Seeking grafting advice

Hi fellow Gardening experts,

I have a thai guava tree that I love. I attempted to use its branches as scion and grafted onto other guava trees as roostock.

The method I used mostly was cleft grafting. I tried my best to match cambium layer of the scion to the cambium layer of the rootstock. I didn't have much luck.

Can anyone who has experience in grafting share your tips & expertise? What is your biggest secret to a successful graft? I currently do not use any sealants. I heard you can use elmer's glue or petroeum jelly. Does anyone have any experience there?

I kept failing last winter and I'm hoping someone would help me with some tips.

i presume youve watched all the vids available???

from what little grafting i have done.. i discovered aftercare is about 99% of the success rate .. the grafting itself was rather simple... what do you do with the plant after grafting???

What are you using to wrap the scion/graft area?

I have more luck with veneer grafts rather than cleft grafts for the more difficult plants. I use perforated Buddy Tape, and then wrap the grafted area with a rubber band to assure good contact. Make sure cambium layers line up as best you can. Depending on where you are, you may need to shade the scion from full sun so it doesn't overheat.

No, no, and no. I'm interested to see what some of the more experienced container growing members here have to say but to my eye, that sucker looks well above the graft line, seen in your last picture just above bark level. If you want more of a trunked tree verses a bush, then prune it off but if you don't mind having a bushy lemon tree, it's just more branching structure. If the leaves are healthy, they are contributing photosynthesis. Keep em. And finally, that pot looks plenty big.

I'd let them grow two season and keep the best, one only branch. You can cut about half off but don't trim water sprouts the same currant season. My preferred way is to graft to smaller branches about thumb size...or cut back about half to 3/4 and graft onto water spouts the following year, scion will heal over the same season, not to worry about braking off and healing in a large diameter stock. I just use saran wrap and didn't bother to seal. Thank you guys for the tip!
