I love your framed print! I would do a shorter squattier lamp.

What is it about the current console that you don't like? Is it the size or the color?

If it is the color... could you paint it a color like a rich gray green? You had already mentioned painting another piece a mossy green.

The art piece looks very nice. I agree with a darker table. A gray-green sounds good, and you could leave the wood top. And I might consider going with a more modern hardware while you’re at it. And yes to a short lamp. Anything tall would cover too much of the art.

Love your print. Actually the order you are using to decorate has worked very well for me in the past. Starting with a piece of art or a fabric and working out from there.

Your current console looks very nice, the gray-green would also work well and would likely look nicer with your new neutral sofa. I would wait until I had my new sofa before changing the color of the console.

aktillery - The main thing I don't like about the current console is the color, especially with the wall color. It was originally placed there to just try out something like that in that place. Before we had the floors refinished last year, there was an upright piano in that location. I like the idea of a gray green, but then I suppose I'd have to rethink the idea of a mossy green for the other piece.

maddieliee - I'm glad I went ahead and bought it, too. I kept thinking about it and looking at it on line.

outside - Good suggestion on replacing the hardware. I'd also like to fill in the starburst detail on the front with wood putty if I end up painting this piece.

oakley - Yes, the floor is dark, but not nearly as dark as it appears in the picture I posted, but black is probably not the right color for that location. We've had that console for a very long time. It's an Ethan Allen piece that came that color.

jill - That's what I was thinking, too, about starting with an "inspiration piece". If the sofa is a lighter, neutral color, then I think the current color of the console will really not work.

So.............if the lamp should be shorter, does anyone have any suggestions?

I read repeatedly (from blogs, decorators, magazines, etc.) that every room needs something black. I've seen it said that black grounds the room. Whatever. I would have to see the rest of the room before saying yes/no to black. Our rooms have light colored upholstered pieces and med. wood floors. I use aqua/green/blue accents. A black piece just never looks right (to me) in our rooms. In the great room, we have a dark brown leather chair. I have a dark vintage leather case (kind of like a suitcase) on top of a cabinet in the room, a floor-lamp and a table lamp with dark bases. So you get my drift, adding in some dark pieces for contrast, but doesn't have to be black. That's what works for our house, at least.

I would wait and decide on a new sofa before painting any of your present pieces. The only thing I see about your present console is it looks a tad country to me and perhaps the rest of the room isn't? By seeing just that wall I can envision a console that is a bit sleeker, yes, maybe darker in color. But I'm not sure as I don't know what the furniture in the room looks like.

tina - Good eye on identifying the console as a tad country. It's from the Country Crossings collection Ethan Allen had back in the 90's (?). I may just be better off finding something darker and as you describe, sleeker. As far as future purchases, all along, I've been wanting to change up the whole room!!!

Tina, I read the same about black, but whoever invented the black rule didn't have their decor thinking cap on. Black is good for a contrast and I get that, but not in a room where the contrast color should be lighter so you don't get swallowed into a dark hole.

The "sleek" table I posted earlier is from Ethan Allen for $1,120 - more than I'd like to spend. However, doing a little looking around on Wayfair, everything I like that has similar lines is at least $900. I really prefer to see what I'm buying before ordering anyway. I have recently been looking on Craigslist, but so far, nothing. Even the consignment shop where I work has had nothing come in that would work for me. I need patience, but now that I have the art hung, I'd love to complete the look!

bac, have you checked Marketplace on FB? I see some great stuff there.

Well................I'm one of the few people on the face of this earth that is not on FB! However, I do see that I can look to see what's for sale on Marketplace. Is there a way to contact someone who is selling something without being on FB?

If you do not have an account you can't contact someone. You could ask a friend who has an account to contact them for you. I did this for a friend and she went and picked up the piece of furniture.

Also, there is an app where people typically double post the same items that they do on Marketplace and of course a lot of other posts. It is call Offerup. I have found tons of things on both Marketplace and Offerup.
