Comments (2)105,000btu's should be fine for a 1900 sq ft house as long as it's insulated properly. Mine is 1800 sq ft and was told we only needed 75,000btu's and it works fine at keeping the house warm. If you're looking to add to your system you might want to check out a coal stove there less work the a wood stove and you get more btu's for your money. Here is a link that might be useful: coal bb...See MoreHelp! the blower on my furnace will not turn off
Comments (5)Something to think about... when most modern gas furnaces try to fire up, they run a pre ignition check. It takes a several seconds but it lets the control board know if all the safety switches are closed, it triggers the inducer motor to run which triggers the pressure switch, then it powers the glow plug ( ignitor), gas valve opens, fires up, then flame sensor sends signal to control board that there is actually flame present. Blower fires up a minute or so after that. With that said...depending on manufacturer ... if there is a problem in one or more of those pre ignition systems, the system tries to fire again... and then again. Usually after 3 times it will go into a "Lock out" ...shutting the heating part of the furnace off and turning on the fan motor. This is why you should get a qualified tech to come check your system out & replace the bad part or make whatever adjustment might be needed. Hope this helps This post was edited by fluffybunnysui on Tue, Mar 4, 14 at 9:17...See MoreReturn air on new air conditioner/furnace
Comments (9)I found this note on page 11 of the installation manual under upflow units: NOTE: Where the maximum airflow is 1800 CFM or more, both sides or the bottom must be used for return air. This is saying the bottom return by itself will be enough. There was note under the upflow unit section, but I assume it also applies to a horizontal installation. You want the filter and grill cover to be at least the size of the opening to the furnace. Making the grille bigger is not going to help if return itself is smaller. I don't know how this is going to work with the filter size you quoted. I would think you would need two 14X24 filters. It would be nice if you get get a 4 inch filter instead of the 1 inch. Otherwise you will be changing the filter every month. The 6x6 stud obstruction should be removed and you want a tightly sealed return duct. The return duct should not have a right angle. It should be a curved elbow to make the 90 degree transition. Sharp angles create more air resistance. How big was the original house and AC, and much area are you adding? Most houses don't have the properly sized duct work to handle a 5 ton AC. Do you have confidence in this HVAC contractor?...See MoreWhy Is Furnace Unit Blowing Cold Air?
Comments (21)Well... after calling out the professionals this morning, I have an update on this issue. The reason it was blowing cold air when the furnace was engaged was that for some strange reason when I would turn up the thermostat for the heat to kick in, the AC would start up at the same time! During my troubleshooting, I didn't notice that the outside condensor unit would start when I turned up the thermostat to turn on the heat. The HVAC technician ended up removing one of the jumpers from my smart thermostat which fixed this problem. I told them that nobody has touched the jumper and it was working just fine previously last season. Even more interesting is that my HVAC unit for the downstairs has the same thermostat (everything is working fine) and it still has the jumper in position. I wonder if there is some type of defect or bug with the model of smart thermostat because I recall around Thanksgiving having a similar issue in another home I own with the same thermostat. It was a little different - -the heat wouldn't come on either (the tech thought it was wiring, etc and I told him nobody has touched the wiring or jumpers on it either). Thank you everyone for all of your help and suggestions!...See MoreAnnegriet
