I have stained trim in my entire house but not one piece of my crown is stained. That would stick out like a sore thumb in rooms with only 8' ceilings. Racing stripes is the term used in rooms that have all that horizontal stained wood. A picture would be helpful. Whatever you paint, make sure your crown and chair rail are the same color. Are your windows painted or stained? I would assume stained. If you keep the baseboards and door trim stained, then the windows are fine to stay stained. However, you may decide to paint the stained trim once you see the clean painted trim, and if you do, your windows would also need to be painted.

Are you going to have curtains on the windows? If so, the impact of fancy (and probably more expensive) trim will be lost. My sis just came to this realization. Crown molding: get a miter box and learn how to use it. LOL We used the pine, some pre-primed and some I did myself. I think you can just tell the difference.

I painted the walls in Wool Skein and the trim in Universal Khaki in the dining room, kitchen, back hall, and mudroom of a showhouse project. The overall look was still bright and light. I feel you do need more substantial mouldings to pull it off. The first pic is overexposed, the second is much closer to IRL.

I would remove the crown molding altogether. IMO, it doesn't work with slab doors. If you want crown molding & painted trim, then you need to change the doors to a traditional recessed or raised panel design. Depending on the windows & other things (like style of fireplaces, etc.) changing the trim style may be a 'don't'....like if the house is decidedly mid-century modern.
