Can you recommend a compact digital camera, & and a 35mm cam question

I'm in the market for a compact digital camera with a low end price range, up to $150. The reason I don't use my iPhone camera is because I have to get my reading glasses out and it's a hassle. I want the camera to be on the small and thin side, and thicker than an iPhone. Any recommendations?

My 13 year old Canon EOS Digital Rebel XTI seems to be taking lousy photos, and don't laugh, but I've never needed to change the CF card after taking thousands of pictures. Could that be the cause of poor images? I delete all pictures after I download them to the pc. We bought an extra CF card when we bought the camera so I'm thinking about swapping them out. I recently read they'll be hard to find soon. Wow.

Thanks, T! I've been fine, just took a social media break, especially Facebook. lol. Then I got totally addicted on playing jigsaw puzzles on my iPad and doing a bit more chalk painting. And reading and eating, and more eating. :)

The camera I mentioned takes video as well. A lot of video too. I take videos of my daughter all the time, and upload them onto private youtube for her great grandma to see. It has a ton of settings on this dial you turn. http://www.imaging-resource.com/PRODS/W170/W170A.HTM# That link should show the photo of the back view of the camera where the dial is. My camera is red. They have an option for automatic shooting where you dont play with any settings besides zoom/flash. Then they have a setting one one up where you can change a few more settings. Then a more advanced setting where a lot of settings can be changed. The link says its $300, but it isnt. I bought mine through Wal Mart on sale in Feb. I dont see them there anymore though. You can buy them online though. The camera has a child or adult face detection mode, smile shutter (neat where it will automatically take photos everytime someone smiles). The smile shutter can also be adjusted for the level of smile needed to snap the shot. It also has Backlight, Backlight Portrait, Twilight, Twilight Portrait, and Twilight using a Tripod. Those are more of the settings on the camera. Either the twilight or the backlight option can make a photo taken in pure darkness, light like taken in the day. Standard Scene modes include Beach, High Sensitivity, Landscape, Snow, Soft Snap, Twilight, Twilight Portrait, Fireworks, Smile Shutter, and Underwater. The Sony W170 Menu system gives you access to Twilight, Beach, Snow, Fireworks, and Underwater. The others are on the Mode dial. I laughed so hard using the creative effects to photos after you shoot using any of 10 editing functions, including: Trimming, Red-Eye adjustment, Soft Focus filter, Unsharp Mask, Cross filter, Partial Color filter, Fish-eye filter, Retro, Radial Blur and Happy Face (really funny). I agree about the mega- pixel count. There will come a point where the mega-pixel count on camera's will be more than what the human eye can even see. Remember the big stereo book shelf speakers of the 80's? Many of them had a tweeter high range/bass reflex range higer/lower than what the human ear could hear. Overkill, but the dogs could hear that ultra high range! A good mega-pixel is needed for print photos. For showing pictures via the web many times people use the huge mega-pixels that make the pictures so larger you have to scroll around to see it even with a large monitor. This is because people don't resize the photo but never the less large web files can be a waste. My first decent digital was a Sony Mavica that used the crap floppy, however it had a 10x opitcal lense which was extremely great for taking macro's and the photos were decent at that time, thoough never as good as a good 35mm in general but you could take some decent close-ups of flowers. Optical lense zoom is important, digital zoom is IMHO useless and you can do the same sort of digital zoom with even a basic photo editing program. I don't ever use digital zoom. I think the most important thing is to spend a few extra bucks and get a camera with a view finder, do not rely strictly on a small LCD screen because you will be sorry if you are in bright light. You will not be able to clearly (if at all) see the subject to be shot due to the bright light. Pot luck photo shots in sunlight is what I mean. I have a small decent Olympus 5.1 mega pixel given as a gift but it only has a LCD screen, no view finder. It is no good for taking pictures of plants in the sun.

My quest was for a camera that could capture accurate colors of iris and roses. I saw my brother's pocket size Canon S230 (pocket size) was doing a better job on peach colored iris so I bought a Canon A95 (excel reviews, point and shoot but not pocket sized). I loved my old Olympus C3020 for reds and blues but figured it could die soon. Was I disappointed with my Canon! Did not do as good a job as my brother's on peach colors and not nearly as good as the Oly on reds, lavenders! The Oly did die after 7-8 years of service and the Canon croaked after only 3 years. I kicked myself for not spending more for a Panasonic (the many many iris pics taken with the DMC-FZ20 that I saw were consistently excellent). In desperation 2 years ago, before iris season, I bought a used $40 Sony W290. Quite good on all iris colors as Sony fans claimed, but there was a missing quality I can't define. Picked up a $100 used Canon G9 last year and I'm at last satisfied. Very good on iris and excellent on roses. So I've concluded that the model is quite as important as the maker. I like the Canon G series better than a friend's Canon EOS Rebel T2i DSLR --- tried it for a few weeks. Still itching to try a Panasonic. Good luck.

We have a Nikon D40X, which has been discontinued in favor of the D60. You know you can't beat a DSLR. Not only is the picture quality amazing at the fastest iso settings, there is absolutely no delay when you take a picture. As a matter of fact, if sports are important to you, 3 frames a second in continuous mode is what you'll want. It delivers. It's also nice to be able to change lenses. I look at it as upgradeable. There is a drawback, size. Because of the size and weight of the camera we actually just bought a compact to supplement. We use the compact for everyday type events and the Nikon for the bigger ones (as long as I'm the one carrying it around). Okay, why'd I tell you all that when your looking for a compact? Because our compact is an Olympus Stylus 1010 and the picture quality rivals the Nikon. Both are 10 megapixel cameras (actually the Olympus is 10.1). Of course we can do much more with the Nikon but the Olympus is much more convenient when traveling or just taking everyday shots. The Olympus cost us $400 with extended warranty, 2x 2gig xD memory chips, and bag. You can get a Nikon D60 for about $650 is you look hard enough. And D40X for a little less than that. I bought an Olympus Tough model camera, known for its waterproofing features and also that it takes decent micro shots for a small hand held camera. My only gripe is that now that I am shooting videos, it doesn't save them in a format that jibes with my editing software and I haven't been able to figure out how to convert the files to something capable of being edited. I can play them but not edit them. It was marvelous for photos though. It's a bit overpriced at this point I think though. But it lives up to its name.

Suggest pay attention to optical zoom and megapixel when comparing. This camera is 20 megapixel and 8x optical zoom.

All I know is that I need to find my readers when I use our little Canon camera. I have fewer problems, quicker readiness and better pictures, using my phone.

Well, I have a couple of fairly high end camera’s and before I invested in them I went to our local camera shop for advise. I told him how I plan on using the camera, my budget and so on and he was able to recommend the best options available. I’ve always been happy with what I’ve gotten and the prices I get them for are still reasonable, plus I’m supporting local business. The store I go to even has free classes to learn about the features. I like Canon’s, right now my smaller camera is a Powershot, given to me as a gift from my sister.

Nicole is into photography, so she might have a good suggestion.

If your Rebel is that old, it might just need to be cleaned. I don't think the storage medium would wreak havoc with your pictures. If you have a camera shop nearby, see if they do cleaning. Otherwise, check with Canon and find an authorized service center.
