Should staircase match floor?
We are designing our dream home and have to decide on the color of our floating wood staircase. It is the focal point once you enter the home and we want it to flow with the rest of the main floor. Now, we haven't picked the floor color yet but our hearts are set on a lighter floor (example in the picture below) and we don't want to go too light for the staircase, we would prefer to keep it on the darker side. We could put porcelain tile from the front door to the base of the staircase and stopping at the kitchen if all else fails (in the second picture below).
Would really appreciate any ideas, feedback, or suggestions!!!

Red and white oak: should my stairs match my flooring?
Comments (14)I ended up getting the red oak stairs and the white oak floor. Did white oak, no stain, water poly. Stained the stairs darker to make it look intentional. I might have been able to get away with keeping the red oak stairs natural, too, if the floor installers had been asked to, and they had looked for boards that were redder and installed them near the stairs. Comments (5)Definitely match stairs to your main floor. When I'm on my main floor, my basement stairs are quite visible. It would drive me crazy if they didn't match the surroundings (FWIW, once you get downstairs there's a laminate floor that barely matches, and I don't really care because the basement is a casual space)....See MoreShould I change the main floor to match stairs?
Comments (3)You seem to have three wood tones- the skirt/handrail/ newel, the reclaimed wood floors, and the new wood floors. Curious how you ended up choosing the very blonde new floors as they are so different from the existing elements. That said you could paint the risers and skirt boards white to eliminate that contrast then only the stairs are visible from the first floor. Or of course you could strip and refinish all the warm toned wood to blend better with the new floors....See MoreStain 2 staircase should match in the same house ?
Comments (1)They do not need to match if you cannot see one from the other. If the basement stairs are open and you can see them from the first floor then I would have them match. The one on the right has too much yellow-green undertone.. One on left is best....See More

3 years agoEasiest to have a stain color picked for your millwork/trim (roughly 2 shades lighter or darker than the floor stain) and just use that same stain for the stairs. If that doesn't work the staircase could be a statement piece as well,
I ended up using my millwork stain on all elements of my staircase, but making a carpet runner my statement piece

3 years agoSoooo we went with a different hardwood and was able to get a custom stain for the stains! So happy with how everything turned out 😊
