My cat has a swollen chin. Is this connected to his rotten tooth?

Scary pitbull in my neighborhood
Comments (26)Thank you for sharing your story golddust. I guess I failed to mention that I, too, am a dedicated dog owner, have always had a dog and can't imagine my life without one. Also, I'm probably a little more paranoid than the average person about dog attacks. My oldest child (he's now 13) was bitten in the face by our own dog (shepherd/samoyed mix) when he was just 8 months old. The dog had always been very protective of him but still, we never left them alone together. She had been somewhat aggressive with other dogs and with children outside our family and I'd had some concerns about that. She had never ever bitten anyone before. I'd even told my DH that I wanted to discuss giving her up. He didn't want to and I felt guilted into keeping her when my instinct was telling me she needed to go. My little boy had just learned to crawl. We had a laundry closet with sliding doors in our hallway. While I was standing there doing laundry, he crawled behind me down the hallway and grabbed the paw of our sleeping dog in our foyer. She bit him once, in the face. But that's all it took. He ended up with over 100 stitches and had to have plastic surgery. He nearly lost an eye. The dog's tooth hit the side of his nose, down by his nostril and slid up and diagonally across to the corner of his eye, slicing his entire nose wide open. His eyelid was slit open at the crease, his eye brow was split and he received multiple puncture wounds. The dog had to be destroyed and it nearly destroyed me. I suffered many months of post traumatic stress disorder. My son's scars have faded a lot and thankfully, he has a face full of freckles to camoflauge them. But maybe by sharing my story, you can all better understand my fears of this dog. It's not just that she's a pitbull. I would likely react this way to any dog with the same behavior but I'll admit, the pitbull part does make me that much more nervous. I wish to God I had listened to my instincts back then. The guilt of getting rid of our dog against my husband's wishes would have been a million times better than the guilt I will always have over the injuries to my son....See MoreHelp! Cat with Swollen Lip!
Comments (13)Both of our cats have had swollen lips in the past two years. One of our cats is a bit OCD and orally fixated; overgrooms herself, kneads and sucks/drools on one of her cat beds and on DH's shirt (while he's wearing it!). A couple of years ago she developed a swollen lower lip. The dermatology vet she was seeing at the time (for the overgrooming) said it could just have been a "slurpy" lip from all the drooling and oral behavior. She gave us Dexamethasone; 1/2 tablet for 3 days. Cleared it up quickly. FYI, my cats love the chicken flavor Pill Pockets, so it was easy to administer the meds. Just a few weeks ago, our other cat developed a swollen lower lip for the first time. She has Eosinophilic Granuloma Complex, and has experienced recurring dermatologic symptoms (skin lumps, bumps) throughout her life (she'll be 7 next month). Since she had just seen our regular vet about a week or so prior to the lip swelling, I spoke with him on the phone, and asked if we could/should treat her with the Dexamethasone we had (we'd bring her in if he felt we should, or if the swelling didn't clear up of course). He felt that was appropriate, but said it would prob take more than 3 days to clear it up, so should continue giving it until it did. I think it took 4-5 days and I gave it to her for an extra day or two to be sure it was completely gone....See MoreRough day for pet owner
Comments (32)LOL, Minnie! Loved your reference to furballs. :o) Thanks for your post. The dog just started taking medicine for Doggy Alzheimers, plus I take a couple meds myself, so between the three of us (dog, cat, and me), we're starting to sound like a bunch of old fogeys with all our medicines. The cat is getting the wire removed from her jaw soon, possibly next week. That should slow her down from all the JUMPING she's been trying to do against doctor's orders! The trouble is, she tries to jump and misses and has taken three spills in the last couple of days--not good for a broken leg. I'm keeping my fingers crossed that she hasn't reinjured the leg, which *finally* has skin again. Sometimes I think interpretting what the furballs are saying is half the joy of pet ownership. You know, putting words in their mouth when they have funny expressions on their faces? :oD...See MoreWhat I did on my Labor Day weekend...
Comments (35)Guys, I thought I'd let you know my Labor Day weekend finally came to an end yesterday. My friend who is a plumber came and crawled under the house. 2 trips to Lowe's and 6 hours later, he cut out 7 unnecessary, leaking couplings, replacing them with three, and straight pipe runs, and fixed 4 different leaks. STBX hadn't drilled through the joists like you're supposed to, to keep the plumbing up next to the floor for warmth. He'd gone down, under, up, across. Down, under, up and across thru out most of the crawlspace. One piece that Plumber Friend cut out, where the largest running water (not drip, running water) was, had 2 pieces of copper pipe held together with electrical tape. Not your best choice of plumbing material, but the theme of my DH's work Good enough for now. Plumber Friend said it had probably leaked since day 1, but over the last 6 weeks or so the tape had finally just plain been washed loose. 166 gallons of water a day! And people think I make this stuff up. So my plumbing is fixed after 3 days with my water shut off, 3 days without TV, 2 days of lost work, a new timing belt on my truck, and today... I get to go to work to pay for all of this. But, that @@#$! holiday weekend is over. Did anyone have a better one? Other than Abfabamy!? Bless your decorative heart!...See MoreHU-516219980
