Fiberglass or cellulose insulation for Tucson?

I live in Tucson so our summer weather gets very hot.

Want to install new insulation in my attic. The house is 20 years old. Not sure which insulation is better in a hot climate. So far, i contacted one company. He uses fiberglass and can raise the R value to about R-38. He said he could use cellulose, but the cost would be higher due to using more material and extra labor.

I recently had the ducts cleaned and also sealed to reduce leakage to 3%.

All the vents were removed and gaps and corners sealed.

One concern is the possibility of fiberglass getting into the house via the attic, as i've heard it can be unhealthy to breathe.

What other issues should i be concerned with using either material?

Is your A/C unit and ducting also in the attic? If it is, also get a price for having the underside of your roof insulated with spray foam. It will put your A/C ducting inside the conditioned envelope and should increase its efficiency.

Back when I was researching this, I think the primary factor I looked at was environmental impacts. I don't think either one is better or worse for the desert, specifically. It's just what R value you make it to.

Could I ask who you used for your vent sealing, if you're happy with their work? I need to have that done desperately.

Thank you all for your responses. Your replies are pretty much in line with my initial thoughts and impressions of the different products. sierraeast-we are not in a huge hurry to drywall the house (within reason of course), so I am not that concerned about the moisture evaporating. Besides, we have not been moving at warp speed up to this point, and I see no reason to believe that my GC will suddenly have a process in place to change things. Anyway, I would imagine that for a product that recommends a 2-3 day evaporation period, an entire week + would suffice. worthy- thank you for the info on the window insulation. Can you share a brand name of the foam? Also, I appreciate your thoughts on the use of blown-in cellulose in the attic spaces. bungeii- I appreciate the advice on the EPA inspector. I don't know how far out they are scheduled, but we would like to be insulating on Monday. We already pushed them off this past week. I have a question about the air infiltration issues that you mentioned. We have 2 bedrooms, a loft area in our 2 story foyer, the bonus room over the garage, the office, and a bathroom all with knee walls. What exactly do I need to be concerned about in particular? From the way it was explained to me, the knee walls would be insulated in the same manor as the exterior walls of the house. Do they need to do something in addition to this? THANKS!

. Both are better; depending upon who you listen to. I built a place in '98; two major concerns of mine were energy efficiency and minimizing environmental impact. Cellulose wins both, hands down in my opinion. Wive's tale #1 about c'lose . . it has less insulating ability when it's settled. True; however the R-value is based upon SETTLED density . . so you get some "extra" R-value at installation which fades over time to the rated value. If you use wet-blown, no settling occurs. Wive's tale #2 about c'lose . . it loses it's fire retardancy with time. Horseradish ! I took a sample from a friends house over 20 years old . . could NOT get it to burn in direct propane torch flame. Nor could I get a brand new sample to burn. Wive's tale #3 about c'lose . . fire retardant is a dangerous chemical. Bolderdash ! Borate salts . . . not terribly far from the stuff used in Borax ( hence it's name ) and also very similar to boric acid used to treat eye infections. While it's not Kool-aid or seasoning; it's certainly not a dangerous chemical unless you purposely ingest the stuff. It's also a good sound deadener; it was in fact originally developed FOR that purpose. The very fact that it has a tendancy to settle; is part of what makes it such good insulation . . . tends to move / fill any little gaps etc that occur when the place moves / shrinks / swells throughout the seasons. I also liked the fact that the embodied energy ( energy used to MAKE the stuff ) is incredibly low when compared to f'glass which takes LOTS of energy to make. No outgassing or "itchies" from cellulose, either. Plus; f'glass will NEVER degrade . . . cellulose eventually will if left to the elements . . . Perfect stuff for an attic . . . just blow it in, but make SURE you have adequate ventilation up there . . . that applies for ANY insulation . . . . I'd choose it simply because it's better insulation from any standpoint I know of . . . the fact that in your case it's cheaper is just a bonus . . . There's my 2 cents . . Bob

I don't live in Ohio, but in Southern California. I just insulated my walls with R-19 loose cellulose on 3 sides of the house and fiberglass on one side. It cost the same. Installer used loose fiberglass on the first outside wall and realized that I asked for cellulose. The fiberglass looks cleaner (white in color) and lighter. The cellulose looks dirtier (brown in color) and heavier with more dust particles. I didn't check for air-leaks...I just decided to get wall insulation to help keep out both summer heat and winter cold. It also helps dampen some noise from neighbors garage band. In the summer, I felt that my house didn't get a hot as usual. It used to get hot inside my house by 1 pm, but after adding the wall insulation the house gets hot by 5 pm. This means that I don't have to turn the a/c as early as before, thus saving some cooling $$$. In the winter (now), my house is more comfortable than it used to be. My walls in my bedroom used to feel cold at night (considering that I'm a mild winter zone) just by putting my hand close to them. Now, it's not as cold even if I touch the wall. Okay, this is all subjective data. If I had to do it over again, I would have chosen the fiberglass insulation over the cellulose. I already had R-25 batt insulation in the attic, but I had the insulation guys use loose fiberglass insulation in all the areas that I missed when I installed the batts myself. I had missed about 10% of my attic primarily above the kitchen. Overall, I paid $1630 to do all the walls (1200 sqft of walls) and about 150 sqft in the attic. I also got a $170 rebate from my gas company. I already have double pane windows and a new aluminum back door. I have a glass door on my wood fireplace (it's a decoration piece) that I never use.

If anyone is still reading this thread, my mom has been suffering for years with blown in cellulose insulation finding its way into her single story house. The HVAC system is in the attic. A fine film of insulation covers every horizontal surface in her house and after 2-3 weeks of foregoing her weekly dusting ritual, you can dust a surface with your hand and have a good amount to visually inspect. She's been there since the house was new, nearly 15 years, and the HVAC company who installed the unit (along with the builder) when it was new have been back countless times to try and figure out the problem. Everything that can be sealed has been sealed. There are a number of pocket doors in the house that were the latest suspects, but even after sealing the tops of those the dust continues. She's had the "dust" analyzed to be sure and it is in fact the same insulation as is in the attic. She lives in South Texas and is to the point now that she's considering having the entire mess vacuumed out of the attic and replaced with batts. It seems completely impossible but I've seen it with my own eyes. If anyone else has had a similar issue and solved it, I'd love to hear about it!!

Loose fill cellulose is a real mess when disturbed, say, if you are looking for where to install a new ceiling fixture, or if you think there may be termites or dead rats, or if strong winds blow through your attic vents. Fiberglass batts are much, much neater to move around and look under.

My A/C unit is in my patio. The ductwork starts in the garage through the furnace and goes in through the attic and the house.

In answer to jslazart, A company called ArrowSeal in Tucson did the duct sealing. I don’t remember the product that they use but it’s some kind of a sealant they put into the machine which runs through the tubing and then seals all the tiny holes that might be in the flex duct throughout the house. Before they did the seal I was at 17% leakage, but they brought it down to 3%.
