Should I go Mid-century modern or 1930's-style?
Comments (30)Our cabinets, though old, were in pretty good shape and now look lovely with our new paint job. I think with older homes it is wise, as you are doing, to consider the period of the home and work with it rather than do what is currently popular. And I think each home has different needs so I'm sure you'll love your new cabinets! I have to admit I was a little sad to see our 1950's GE Stratoliner range be sold but that electric cooktop was so hard to do anything but boil water on and not much could be on simultaneously, and I fell in love with the Lacanche. Anyway, I also agree per above posters that style wise it doesn't have to all be one era. Our vintage artwork is from the 30s, our red formica table and chairs (not in the pic) are from the 50s and our cabinet pulls are newer but probably 50s inspired. I love the pulls you picked and I like the 30s-50s updated kitchen in the last several posts, which seems like it would work with your bathroom staying as is. One thing we considered is that if we tore out the kitchen and put in a true MCM kitchen it would look wierd with our 1950s extensively pink tiled bathroom and then that would need to be updated. By keeping the style of our kitchen to its era, the kitchen and bathroom seem more in sync and I don't seeing us (other than putting in new grout and maybe painting the walls) changing our pink tiled bathroom, which also made our approach more cost effective. I think doing a blend of 30s-40s to early 50s, your bathroom would fit nicely into the updated kitchen....See MoreHow to i transform this entry into more of a modern farmhouse style?
Comments (28)I'm actually a fan of benches by the front door. But I live in The Great White North and feel like it's polite to provide a spot for guests to sit and remove snow- or mud-covered boots. I probably would NOT put a bunch of cubbies or otherwise provide a "drop zone" for the kids to dump everything at the front door. That is ideally kept to the "back hall" or "mud room" if you have one. Because if you give them a horizontal surface, they will use it and you'll spend the next umpteen years yelling at them to get their backpacks/etc out of the entryway. As to the other, I've been in lots of farm houses. (Farm country, and all) None of them look like that. Especially with that cast iron railing. All of it is much nearer "Rustic Italian" or something similar. Don't feel like you have to limit that to "Tuscan Gold" paint, espresso cabinets, and travertine floors. Most of that trend was WAY overdone. So - no grapes, no roosters, etc. Go look for images and you see lots of what you have here - white walls, exposed beams and brick, etc. There is a lot to work with there - but it probably can't be shoe-horned into "HGTV Modern Farmhouse." And you really don't want to do that. It's a trend that will be passing off pretty soon, I suspect. Remain faithful to the style and bones of the house and you'll always have a timeless classic....See MoreAnybody Watch a Very Brady Renovation?
Comments (11)LOVED the Brady Bunch growing up! I watched the first episode of the renovation show last night, although I didn't sit thru every minute of it, I like seeing the end results more than I like watching the actual work. I thought it was great to see how different the actual house was inside - to the point of having to lower the foundation so you couldn't see the 2nd floor addition from the front view of the house. Amazing what they can do... and how much $$ they seem to be willing to spend! I enjoyed seeing the 6 "kids" now and having them involved is a fun idea. Did anyone say what they intend to do with this house once it's complete? I can't imagine anyone wanting to live in it - esp with it being stuck back in time! lol...See MoreTrying to figure out how to make in-laws kitchen style more like me
Comments (29)Thank you all so much for indulging my brainstorm!! I think what is bothering me most is I dont have a clear vision, but we know exactly what we need to do with the rest of the house. Under the ceiling fan is where the kitchen table goes and then the room wraps around to the family room. The entire wall on the other side is all glass sliding doors and it gets full sun all day long. My husband actually loves the fan because the sun can make the room quite hot especially while cooking. there is lighting under the cabinets for sure and it does look nice and bright when all the lights are on, but I do love the pendant lights over the island idea. its definitely a few years away before we do Anything but I LOVE that soft green @Maureen posted. I actually think that might be perfect for the island. Love the idea of losing those cabinets beside the stovetop - I hate them because they just scrape along the counter. Putting one big hood fan is a perfect idea @designinteriorsouth. If I were Doing it today I would be inclined to paint the perimeter cabs white and then change the backsplash To a lighter colour....See Moreelimorgan12
