should i have a deck or a patio?
Comments (13)I have both. I have the patio where it is appropriate on a lower walk out ground level. And then I have a deck above it. It is actually part of the wrap around porch, so it is a covered deck, and I guess we do call it the back porch as well as deck sometimes. And then on the upper level above that, we call that the deck. There are porch lanterns, ceiling fans w/lights, speakers, front door bell chime, plug-ins, and water spigots. We used this see-thru acryllic glass stuff for a railing system. Didnt want to spoil my view. It was a bit more expensive but a good decision. On the patio below, we opted for no overhead lights or fans, just wall mounted lights and speakers, and a few spigots and plug-ins. We are just starting to camp out, so not officially moved in yet, but I see us using the back deck mostly, because it is on the level built for me and my husband. My daughter is upstairs, so she will use her deck alot I am sure. It is cozy and quiet. And I see the lower level patio being used alot when we have larger crowds that spill over to the rec room downstairs, and then spill over to the outside/patio. I don't see my husband and I using the patio hardly at all except for when we have company, because I don't want walk down, or pack stuff down the stairs when the deck is just out the back door (accessible from the laundry room, dining room, and master bedroom) So I see each space being used, just in different ways....See MoreNew home- Deck VS Patio
Comments (7)Ron, That was my initial reaction too. However, when I visited the masonary yard, my wife found and fell in love with the pattern and design. She called me over to tell me she found the perfect material for the patio and said it was bluestone. Visions of BLUE/Green slabs were dancing in my head as she lead me to another part of masonary yard and sure enough there it was brand new designs and they were all bluestone... My jaw dropped, when the salesperson confirmed it was indeed bluestone... Quote: ************************************************ Stones Bluestone -- despite its name -- is available in several colors, from yellow to purple. Bluestone typically is sold in 12-inch by 12-inch or 18-inch by 18-inch sections and is considered a more formal looking material than flagstone. ************************************************* (above quote was cited from this website here:) http://www.renovatorsplace.com/dsp_articles.cfm?l_article_id=87&l_cat_id=109&catid=41 As you can see we picked up random sizes for our patio and so far, knock on wood, both the patio and the deck has held up well for the first NY Winter season... -Alex...See MoreWhich of these bad window treatments should I pick for patio door?
Comments (17)our vacation home faces full west out the back. for the kitchen i did a solar shade, its good enough as your eyes generally look down while prepping. for the dining room window next to the kitchen the solar shade wouldnt be enough to eat facing the window. did a plain old fashioned mini blind.. well, not that mini but not a wide one either. i have 4 sliders in that house and they all have vertical blinds, because thats the only thing that works if you actually get sun into rooms you want to be in, and have the slider function as well. we got rid of the old plastic clacky blinds for something more fabric but still quite light blocking. before i bought verticals again, i looked at real estate listings for that area to see what other homes did with their sliders. EVERY SINGLE ONE, bar none, including multi million dollar homes with everything updated, had vertical blinds on their sliders OR ELSE no treatment at all. which means they took down their verticals to sell the house. verticals were invented along with sliders. sadly the first ones were really pretty fugly, and people took to hating on them....See MoreWhich IKEA bath vanity color should I pick? High Gloss Gray vs. White
Comments (9)wow your choices are almost identical to mine. We also got the Godmorgon vanity (but in walnut) as we felt we were doing so much gray and white everywhere, we needed to warm it up with a different tone. I don't think you can go wrong with either, but I'd probably pick gray over white, because the vanity top will be white as well. We have a very small bathroom and I don't feel the dark vanity really makes it feel claustrophobic!...See Morejck910
