Furniture Design Dilemma living room

Need help furnishing awkward living room!

I seem to be destined for awkward-shaped living rooms with our prior rentals, but now we are in our forever home and I want to nail the layout before we buy forever furniture :) Would love your help figuring out the layout!

Our living room is narrow, and has a lot of door openings/doorways that need to be managed for good traffic flow. Ideally, would like a sofa and two seats for guests (whenever this pandemic ends). Would love a nice airy layout with good flow.

In case it matters, we like mid-century modern furniture, nothing too bulky. Open to nontraditional ideas like a curved sofa. ...

No ceiling light. Looks like TV will have to go over the FP. Float a sofa facing FP

Why not put a pair of comfy armchairs flanking the fireplace? Style the shelves with 1/3 books, 1/3 large decor items and 1/3 open space. Are there any outlets there for lighting? Put TV on the long wall where the black chair is. Set it on a credenza 25% wider than the TV. Float a small scale sofa perpendicular to the stair and fireplace with a coffee table in front of it. Put a console or sofa table on the wall behind the sofa with two lamps and art. Leave a 30" traffic path between sofa and table if possible. Art 5" above the mantle no wider than the firebox opening. No need for a ceiling fixture; just upgrade lighting to 4000K LEDs for daylight feeling night or day. Is there lighting in the stairwell? It needs some. Straight leg chairs will be best because splayed legs will block the traffic path and be hazardous. Not sure an egg chair will work there but its fun. Too tall and big I think. Go for a low profile like the green one and you can fit a pair of them in.

Like you I have an awkward tv room with three double doorways, a fire place and two windows too. One thing that has helped a lot when entertaining is to have peripheral chairs next to my fire place aswell as in my three window sunroom. The side chairs are comfy yet light enough to easily pull near the main setting for football viewing, games or conversing. I would find some light yet comfy arm chairs to place in you lovely windowed nook. And a side chair or two beside the fireplace too. Move the tv a bit toward the kitchen entry maybe on an articulating arm mounted to the wall.

If your room's seating is limited due to the swing of the doors I would be tempted to just remove them or open them flat. They look good but are rarely a practical or needed element in my world. The arch is a barrier all on its own from the entrance, and if the natural flow is to arrive then come through that living space they will just be a pain,especially with the comings and goings of 8 people. I am not a fan of these huge sectionals that seem to be creeping back into vogue but they would give you a lot of seating and its back to the french doors would be another barrier from the house entrance. It would also force traffic flow to the edge of the room.

@roarah you are absolutely right about the fireplace as the focal wall. @Nahom K We think it would be a great use of space to use a pair of open storage shelves/ built-ins in the niches beside the fireplace. Placing a couple of accent chairs by the window creates an intimate reading corner. We've placed the TV above the fireplace here to maximize the space and give you lots of seating space. You might try flipping the dining room and living room areas. We think the TV might work well on the blank wall where you have the dining room. Then we might place the dining room table on the angled wall next to the kitchen. See our designs here for a few other design ideas.

You are amazing! good news - i don’t need a tv in here. Sorry I should have mentioned. Can I put a sofa along the wall where the black chair is and then have to chairs facing the sofa?

Yes, here's a way to do it. Place pieces far enough apart for a traffic path through them, so you can access all the doors and the stairs.

Another rendition of the same thing. Be sure to get a large rug to ground it.
