Well from one window dunce to another, from the pictures I see - seems like there are no hard and fast rules. Looking at your window only - my gut would say to put the rod between the top of your window trim and your ceiling. I wouldn't think you would want it lower than the top of the trim. I suppose the final location depends on what you want your drapes to do at the floor level. As for the width - I think that will be determined by the width of the stack when your drapes are open and how much window you want showing. And if you can get your brackets in a stud by giving or taking an inch - that would be a factor (I think). That's how I'm handling my own drapery saga.

Hi there. In this case I would hand it a few inches above the molding, or 1/2 way between the molding and the ceiling. And at least 10" out to each side so they can clear the doors when open.

@laurahal11 Hmm - where to position side rods? You have to consider both the vertical & horizontal placement. Looking at your window trim, for the horizontal, I’d place in the middle of your window top trim because that trim piece flares at top. So, when choosing the decorative finial, pick one that fits nicely in middle flat part of the whole 4” piece. For the vertical placement, I Googled images of side rod placement for examples & I’d go with placing the finial just inside the trim piece which should have the drape panel hanging just inside the edge of the side trim on windows. It can be anywhere from 2" above the trim to the ceiling. It's preference, but I like it about halfway. Will the curtains be custom or readymade? If custom, mount the rod before you measure for curtains. If readymade, the length of the curtains may dictate where the rod needs to go. You don't want them more than 1/2" from the floor, preferably 1/4". Curtains should not reveal the side trim and in fact should be at least an inch into the glass, otherwise they look like wall panels rather than window curtains IMO. I know some may like this look but I find it odd looking.
