Pomegranate Tree Problems/Questions

I have two Pomegranate tree's completely mature and growing. They are about 13 years old. I grew up here and we didn't take care of the plant well at all.

1st problem: the fruit opened or something opened and are eating it. How do I identify the threat and handle it? Bugs? Birds? Etc?

2nd problem: when I tried the fruit a few years ago, the inside was white not red, and the taste tasted horrible. How should I fix this? Add fertilizer?

I haven't grown pomegranates, but I'd guess it's an issue of ripeness. I'd say that second problem would be that the pomegranate wasn't ripe (or maybe overripe? I don't have experience to say which, but I'd lean towards underripe).

I've read that splitting is a sign that they are ripe ... though of course birds and all are going to raid those split fruit, so I believe the splitting is natural, but maybe catch them before they are that split? I bet if those are ripe, those that set at a similar time are just about ready, too, so you could try picking and opening one. It could also be a watering issue, though; I know a lot of fruit develop splits and cracks if watering is uneven.

While air temps are between 60-80, I usually fertilize at 4 tsp in a 2-1/2 gallon watering can, which is about 1-1/2 tsp per gallon, and I see no evidence of plants having trouble keeping leaf margins & tips hydrated (no sign of fertilizer burn), or any sort of sense that the plants are being pushed too hard, so I think 1 tsp/gallon on a weekly basis is well within reason ..... if you are watering copiously so the soil is being flushed at each watering. I usually just repost these links when someone asked about hard pomegranates... There are a few of us trialing the hardier Russian/Iranian/Turkmenistan poms in zones around 6/7. There are some good threads about it if you google around for 'zone 6b pomegranates'. Yes, pomegranate will continue to flower and set fruit well into the season - often far too late for all of its fruits to mature before winter sets in. That's one reason for its popularity as both an edible fruit plant AND an ornamental.

It's in the back of my backyard. The wall is on it's north and west side. So it's facing towards my south and east side.

Should I prune off the fruit that has been split and eaten?

It is in Las Vegas Nevada. Zone 9 A I believe.
