Thanks for the link MrClint, I had done a google search too. My plant is small, not that much bigger than the 2 newly purchased plants so pruning and digging up is not that big of a challenge. Thanks for the shade info Bamboo. The giant CA Oak is a real problem in our yard. It has already over taken a few trees in the yard and pretty well killed them off from the shade. But I think it is close to the limit of how much it can grow and this is the opposite corner. The persimmons do well there. I have been watching my planting holes, the shade comes and goes through out the day. It is at its worst in the winter, but the pomes are dormant then anyway. Thanks Scott. I was hoping some one would have info that they transplant well any time....lol I am impatient. But since the garden has many things for me to finish up, I will have a great hole waiting for the day the leaves are done falling.

They can, and will, get quite large with time. My uncle has an old tree on his property that is about 25 feet tall and about 25 feet wide or more at the canopy. They keep it pruned below and it had an umbrella-shape. However, if you water it less, it will stay a bit on the small side. Keep in mind that this tree was likely planted when the house was built in the 1930s. Pruning will help as well because they love to send out new shoots from ground level. Without proper removal of these vigorous shoots, the plant can become a messy thicket. Commercially grown pomegranates are usually kept about 8 feet tall and about 5 or 6 wide so I think that with proper pruning, your tree can stay within that size and fruit well for you.

Your tree looks like it is not getting any nourishment from the soil, barely staying alive. I would wait a little longer now until it is dormant, and then remove what is left of the container, dig up the tree and replant it. I would expect the roots to be strangling them self and needing a little surgery to straighten them out. Some shaping of the foliage would also be appropriate at that time.
