Water, ice and sub-zero temps!
Comments (8)BasilB, a fast change in water temperature is always a bad thing for fish. Water from an underground source or a public water system can have a much different temperature compared to the water in a pond. My public water tends to be in the low 60's all year. That could represent a 30 degree difference in water temperature from a pond during winter. That said, the recent outdoor temperatures probably chilled the water very quickly for you and resulted in minimal temperature change to the pond. The stock tank heater I use has a thermostat that shuts the unit off once the water temperature is above freezing. I also have my heater connected to a remote power switch so I can shut it off from inside my house. I have a telescope fixed to the hole created by the bubbles and can toggle the heater depending on what I see. (LOL, what ever it takes to stay warm.) I'm currently enjoying double digit temperatures and the air pump is sufficient by itself, but I have a feeling I may need the stock tank heater again before spring....See MoreA/C unit not bringing temp down
Comments (37)I've noticed something: I think my AC is fine.....It's actually a 16-year-old Trane XR11 all-electric heat pump. I too like to keep my AC at 70F (which is way lower than most people), but in contrast, we keep the heat at 64F in the winter. Anyway, I've noticed on FULL SUN days, around the hottest part of the day when the sun is beating down on the house from like 3pm to 730pm, it can't maintain 70F. Now, it can maintain 72F but not 70. And this is temps around 93F... Now, if it's a partly cloudy day where it's clouds/sun/clouds/sun, it doesn't allow the attic to heat as much, then it can maintain 70F Even if it's 93F out..it all depends on how the clouds are that day...The attic is insulated but gets hotter than Venus even though there ARE VENTS in the attic roof...Since I live in a relatively new subdivision that doesn't have huge trees blocking the sun..I'm sure there could be improvements made in the attic but I'm really not sure how. When I go up there, it's white blown-in insulation everywhere EXCEPT for a small area where you have access to the air handler....which is directly above the laundry room. I guess that area should be insulated too but it's not... I think it my situation, it's just pure sun hitting the attic causing heat to radiate. The other place I lived had LOTS of trees which makes a night and day difference for AC....I also know someone who lives in a 2-story house and the top floor is always warmer. Luckily, I have a single story.. I never take AC for granted... We are so lucky to have it and I would be MISERABLE without it. I will say one last thing: My brother installs these. One day I was having a problem (it was the condensate line plugged) He asked me to go up there and looking at something while I was on the phone with him. I could NOT stay up there even 3 min's.. I can't imagine anyone getting "used" to those type of conditions in the attic. Anyway, side note: It took 3 different trips for them to finally get the condensate drain unclogged. They kept thinking it was unclogged but it wasn't. They didn't charge me for the additional trips. It was a good company.. It's just that when they would come out, it wasn't very hot so the AC wasn't running a lot, so it was hard for them to tell unless the unit had been running for a long time. Sorry I'm rambling but I'm just bored ATM...See MoreDeere LT133 Cranks But Won't Start
Comments (19)Hi, everyone. I wanted to send thanks to everyone who helped me diagnose and fix this problem, because: I'm back up and running! I got a spark tester, and the old ignition coil was indeed not sparking. I put in the new ignition coil, and the spark tester lit up. Took out the spark tester, turned the key, and the tractor started right up. Put a couple of hours of mowing in before running into a much more easily diagnosed problem: I ran out of gas! The engine is still sometimes hunting and surging in a rhythmic way, but I am guessing that has to do with the fact that I messed around with the carb adjustment screws when starting to diagnose this and never got them back to the right settings. Will tinker with that, but the bottom line is that it works again. Thanks again to everyone for helping me get there. Also great to learn all this stuff, since I had never so much as gapped a spark plug before....See MoreWolf range knob "drift" - won't stay in place
Comments (95)Full story - we have had the burner problem for years, but lived with it because we too were told it would be an exorbitant fee by the authorized appliance tech. I started this thread originally because of that frustration. The range is seven years old. A month ago, the oven stopped heating properly. We could live with the burner drift, but the oven was nonfunctional (dual fuel range) and that truly turned the range into a five grand paperweight where a perfectly functional $1,500 range would have slid in quite nicely. We called the tech company and just mentioned the burner issue on the phone in passing as a side note, but that we really needed the oven fixed. They sent the techs out the next week, and they had brought the burner valve replacements with them - we didn't ask, they just brought them. They took a look at the range and said, "oh yes, the burner valve is a known issue and Sub Zero is paying for our parts and labor. The oven problem is not covered, so that will be $X to fix for parts and labor," which we had expected. It was a pleasant surprise to get the burner valves replaced at the same time at no cost. This is just our experience - YMMV. I was trying to help this group by posting what happened for us to close the loop on the thread, and now this is as far as I can go. Good luck to all!...See More- 3 years ago
