Mixing Vinyl with Hardie

Hello -

My wife and I are building a home and we are faced with a dilemma. The style of house that we want is a 2 story white farmhouse. It is rather large, therefore Hardie or Cement Siding is out of the question. At the moment the house is going to be white vinyl siding. On one face of the house and in the peaks we would like a vertical board and batten look. See photo with hand drawn board and batten. Does anyone have opinion on using a Hardie board for the vertical siding to achieve the look we want? Would the transition look out of place with such different materials? Thanks in advance for any help!

Are you already building, or still planning?

Your "peaks" are called gables, and transitions between dissimilar materials need to be well thought out. I'd discuss with your builder about his plans.

If you want B&B, I'd keep it in the gables and not use it as you have on the right side.

Vinyl B&B is also available.

Hardie Board Siding Cost vs LP Smart Side

All our previous homes in different continents, had stucco. Moving to Hardie in PNW was a transition for us. With over 6000sf of siding to install in the home we are building, we initially considered alumnium but could not come up with a design/pattern we liked. We then chose Hardie and designed the layout/look ourselves and love the final results; it was at least 33% more material and 50% additional labor and took the installers almost a month to install, they did a perfect and precise job with 100% perfect panel alignment around the 400' plus house perimeter (photos in my other posts). Hopefully with two solid coats of BM exterior paint, it will need a lot less maintenance than my stucco did in harsh NJ winters. Look for an update in five or six years.

I like the idea of doing board and batten on one side (maybe the front?) and doing the regular, cheaper siding on the sides. have you tried matching colors? Obviously your sides will barely be seen, so I get where you're coming from Color-wise, I think this would look amazing between your brick neighbors! what are you replacing the lattice with? What if you did something like this around the bottom? I love the brick w/the brick stairs. you could use similar red brick like the others. don't look too hard at the way the house is done, just look at the the way the stairs and foundation suport are done, along w/the blue color, and maybe the addition of wood (to warm up cooler tones) Also notice the diff styles of siding. here's board / batten on front (which I like) board and batten on the rear with some cedar (or cedar composite) shake in the gable portion. board/batten on the top w/regular on the bottom, cedar posts (which I like) Combo of both. I love this dark midnight blue color, especially between the two brick both batten and vertical on the balcony portion. James Hardie board and batten in the sage color w/black trim, warm wood. how it would look between the brick. You could also do a stone base foundation instead of the brick. Navy and crisp white. I'd do the wood porch and ceiling w/this Just look at the colors, not the style. too modern. We are being framed now. The builder has not done transition between Hardie and vinyl before - I am simply looking for info if this HAS been done and be visually appealing. Of course transitions can be done - we are doing it for our stone to grade ....

There is a single vinyl BandB product that comes close to the intent. Most vinyl products have a width much smaller than we would like. CertainTeed has a wider product - that we are considering. Hardie board is available in a wider product.

We have seen many pictures of a whole side with vertical BandB. Is this a stylistic objection or is there another reason against this.

I like B&B all the way down the right side. The connecting shed dormer PPF. suggests would give you more space on the second story unless that was going to be a vaulted entry then it would be a waste. I would only do the new dormer if it is a benefit.

I wouldn’t select vinyl if LPSmart Side meets your budget. You can space the battens as you see fit

what products did you go with? we are considering LP B&B vertical and certainteed 8” horizontal, transitions only being at the gables

We did CeetainTeed for the entire house with B and B as the picture shows. CertainTeed has the widest vinyl B and B on the market AFAIK. do your research and be clear when talking with supplier or builder there is a much more narrow product as well that does not accomplish the ”look” we were going for.

Thanks! did you mix with horizontal as well? wondering if it would work well with certainteed double 5 horizontal, our builder had concerns about the width of the 8” certainteed horizontal product.
