SOOO many emotions......

and not either of them regret. I just gave notice and will be retiring the 1st of the year. Somehow you work your whole life for this, it always seemed so far away and viola! Already fielding inquiries of what I'm going to do, will I serve on this board, do this, do that...... I've decided I am taking a gap year and tell them just that. Unlike so many young ppl, I never got the chance to do that in my youth so 40 years later......

Congratulations. Certainly it is time to do what you want and when you want it. I like saying you are taking a gap year before committing to volunteer endeavors.

Big congratulations to you! What an exciting next step this will be, and I know you must be fielding a lot of different emotions. I would imagine that includes relief, and of course excitement about what's to come. A "gap year" (or three!) sounds like a perfect plan. I hope you get to do exactly what YOU want to do during that time. You deserve it.

Treasure, good way to phrase it. I have been into genealogy for at least a dozen years. I have the privilege of having my parents until late middle age, but not having lived in proximity of my extended family for most of my life, knew precious little about them aside from disjointed snippets of my folk's recollections. There was a void I needed to fill. I can only imagine how it must have affected you and of course it was emotional. Copy those pictures as quickly as possible and share them with every relative you know. When I used to go to auctions, there were often boxes of family photos in the mix to be lost forever. There are also people who keep family photos to themselves and won't share, thinking they'll be safe forever. It only takes one generation down the line for them to be lost. My cousin out west and I had both started on a crusade to contact as many cousins and distant relatives as possible and get copies of photos they may each have in their possession and make them available in digital format to any of our kin. The more they're shared, the better chance they have of being preserved for posterity. I'm so happy for you.

Thanks for the suggestions and appreciated the input. Agreed that one should inform his family if it's emergency. Possibility he might be suffering from early stages of dementia and I have no idea if he is seeking medical profession for that. Why, he's got symptoms like short term memory loss (cannot remember recent events), anxiety, depression, changes in his behaviour and personality. He said he has been having a gradual short term memory loss over a number of years. I know of another elderly friend and this friend too is suffering from gradual short term memory loss and the effect is gradually debilitating. It's difficult to suggest to him to go check his short term memory loss out with a doctor, as he is not one that would take advise well. So all I can do is give him a phone number of helplines here and let him sort it out himself. I will add that he is finding it hard like confused and lost with even managing his own life. He also suffers from bowel issues and must go to the toilet straight away. It's not funny because wait till you and I reached an elderly age we too would suffer from incontinence and bowel problems, therefore have some compassion and empathy. Many years ago I know of a friend's Mum she suffered from dementia for many years and no one knew about it, not even my friend and my friend's Mum's relatives. It was only a year before she passed away something was done about it. My friend after living in another country for a decade, had to make decision to come back after making the decision to live in another country for good, then returned to sort the situation out. I can inform you that my friend's Mum's condition by the time it was sorted out it was very sad, because my friend's Mum did not seek medical profession to get assistance and help years before, therefore no one knew my friend's Mum was suffering from dementia to intervene earlier.

Make whatever recipe for catsup you use. Add some lemon juice to taste...I use about 2 T. per cup of the catsup, and some horseradish. The amount depends on how hot you like your sauce and how hot your horseradish is. I would add grated root directly to the mix. Taste and see if it needs to be hotter...if so add red pepper flakes to taste....and can like catsup. Linda C

Congrats, sister! I retired almost a year ago, and think I’ll take up a job at some point, but am glad to have this time to just be. That’s something I never had a chance to do. Hope you get to explore your life with a little bit more intentionality. Cheers!

Congratulations! I took the same step this past spring. Covid made it unexpectedly odd as I never really had a chance to formally say goodbye to anyone. Despite that, I’m so glad I did. I never quite realized how much anxiety and stress I was under day to day. I’m thankful to DH for talking me into it (he retired early as well) and also grateful for others on this forum posting about their own early retirement and easing my fears.

Congratulations! Good response on the gap year. People always ask what you plan on doing after retirement. When they asked me, I just responded that for the immediate future, I would just sit and enjoy the new routine (or lack of it). For quite a few months, I actually just enjoyed going with the flow. I love retirement!

Congratulations! Something to look forward to for the next 3 months. It's been over 3 years and I have loved every minute of retirement. I was never so glad as when this pandemic hit as I would not be able to work effectively from home due to the work I did. It would have been very frustrating. Anyway the idea to take a gap year is great!

Mazal Tov!!!! Taking a gap year is brilliant. I wish I had thought of that when I retired 5 years ago. I ended up on a couple of Boards, being bombarded by some non-profit organizations to provide professional support at no cost and I took a part time job. I'm glad I took the job but everything else I ended up extracting myself from last year. Enjoy, and take your time deciding what you really want to do or not do.

Well I have things I want and need to do during my “ gap” year. We are expecting our 10 th grand baby. Selling one house, moving back to the farm and renovating that house and I have a great garden to get started. Throw in family time and some travel to visit family and it’s filling up. But I won’t be making long term commitments(beyond family) or start community involvement Or consider working during the transition. Thank you for the well wishes, I am looking forward to it. As word gets out I’m getting more and more “ we gotta wrap this up before you go” so work days are jammed full and time is flying....

Congratulations SS, and thanks for giving me a new name for the journey I'm on. It's similar. I was calling it a "sabbatical" but "gap year" sounds hipper!

I am so not hip, but youre welcome! My countdown will feel shorter as I just found out today I need to take 15 days off between now and January 1st or lose the vacation time........
