Whether to remove partially brown leaves from young avocado tree

I've been growing a Haas avocado from seed in a pot indoors for about a year. Older leaves have been full of brown spots for several months but are hanging on; the two newest leaves are in great shape and large. However, I've been pinching it back trying to get multiple branches and the problem has been that usually just one of the pair of buds grows, so I've pinched back again and am trying to coax some of the lower buds to grow out (they are there, but stalled). My question: should I leave the partially brown leaves on because the green part is still contributing the plant's carbon fixation and energy, or should I take them off to convince the plant that it really needs to sprout more to have more leaves? It's in a sunny spot in high drainage soil, watering it twice a week, and I'm giving it citrus/avocado fertilizer. Thanks.
