Extwrior door with 2 sidelites

Hello:
We are looking to replace our steel front door entry system to help with drafts in winter and to update the appearance of our home while keeping the traditional colonial-style feel. Also I would like full glass sidelites with clear glass to brighten our foyer (our home faces north).
- is there a fiberglass door manufacturer you’ve had good experience with?
- what color and/or finish would you recommend? I will paste a picture of our home and the style I am considering.

Comments (19)Good points all around, I am going to spend more time standing at the bottom of the street looking into the house to try to imagine what the views will be (somewhat difficult at the framing stage when there's just a big cutout for the front door. But perhaps I can get an idea of what could be seen. The main "activity" in the great room is sitting at the couch watching tv or having conversation. Much more activity in the kitchen which will be private from the front door views. I like the idea that the porch light will equalize some of that effect. I think I need to see the door glass in person. It's also comforting that I *could* add sheers, as long as that is possible with sidelights....i know the ones I have in my current home would not support tensions rods as the sidelight trim is angled inside and just not enough depth for it to be stable. Sounds like a visit to the door showroom is in order. Light certainly is a consideration as well, having the door on the north, but then again with the tall south facing great room windows right across from that entry door I expect light to filter in all the way across during months when the sun is lower in the sky. Comments (4)Answers: 1. Yes, however, it is more of an advantage from the standpoint of trying create a real wood door look with the composite and stainable material. Are they less attractive to carpenter ants and rot proof...yes. Either jamb selection (assuming the door is installed correctly) should avoid both of those potential problems. 2. Carpenter ants should be treated right now and killed off good and dead before swapping the door. They should not move into the new door if the door is installed properly. Comments (5)I really like yellow with gray. When you paint the door and the sidelights, paint the trim around the door and in between the door and the sidelights, too, so it looks like one unit. If the walls of the entry are a darker gray than the brick, I would paint them the lighter gray....See More

3 years agolast modified: 3 years agoAgain, your home is not Craftsman style, so that particular door does not suit your home. Here's a sample of what I think you need (without the fanlight.) For more light in the foyer, paint a light color and install 4000K LEDs in your foyer light fixture, then brighten the floor with a rug.
