Improve curb appeal for 1920s Tudor

We own a 1920s Tudor in Dallas that we absolutely love but feel like it’s lacking a bit of curb appeal. We will be replacing the roof soon but what else can we do to make it look more quaint and cozy? Open to any and all suggestions!

When choosing a new roof, I would look for one with highly dimensional shingles- something to evoke the look of shake or slate. It would give it a storybook/cottage look. I would also entertain a multicolored roof.

I wouldn't say it looks dour. It looks very homey and comfortable. I would do something with that window above the porch. It looks forgotten about. It doesn't really match the other windows and blends into background while the others are white on dark and really pop. On first impression, I really love the right side of your house. It's strong, you've got a huge shrub, and the tree frames everything. Maybe if you framed the left side, in front of the left edge, with a really tall evergreen. Something that is bolder than the tall shrub beside the door. Maybe there is already something there that isn't in the picture. But just from what I see, it needs a little boldness there. I don't know if mums grow up there, but it would be cool to see something low and mounding coming out on either side of the doorway before you get to the porch. Then have a few smaller things around them. Have the beds blend back into the other foundation plantings. The dark red door is classic but there doesn't seem to be any other red in the area, at least not right now. Maybe change the red to a tone that agrees with the bricks. I can't tell, but I think I see a few red bricks. Maybe match to your reddest brick. Just some thoughts. :)

The more I look the more I think I like house number 4 in the above if one were to keep the natural stone. Although the bottom shutter color changed in the transfer I like how a gray shutter with slight blue undertone brings together the gray-ish roof and the gray tones in the stone entry. I also like the little brick band under window painted one of the creamy colors in the entry stone to liven it up a tic and make some relation to rest.. (Edited to add: is the roof a gray tone in real life or is it showing that color on my monitor? ORIGINAL BELLOW.

I love it without the shutters, but since it's such a classic (and stunning) home, shutters are probably in order. I'll let others comment on that. What would add layering to what you think is a flat look is amazing landscaping. Get a designer from a small garden center to help design a landscaping plan that will add shapes, color, and depth to your beautiful house. Note: this house doesn't need shutters since the gardens add so much to the house.

As Beth said, move the cars and take photos that scan the entire width of the property. Stand on the public sidewalk approximately opposite the front door and take a series of photos without moving from one place. Start facing the left property line and rotate your body to take a series of slightly overlapping photos that goes across the front of the house and any associated front landscaping until you get tot the left property line. Being able to see The Who front of your property will give us more to work from and get you more helpful suggestions. You can just add the photos in that follow up comments.

Yes the shingle we chose is called colonial slate. Has a bit of gray blue and red in it.

Your house looks amazing as is! It looks like the “after” photo of a renovation. Everything is trimmed up nice and the colors really pop against the brick color.if you have money to burn maybe a larger porch lantern, a bench for the porch in iron with some shape that is taller and can be seen from a ways back.

Thank you! I would love to add an iron bench but there is not much space without it blocking off the side porch. We’ve moved the blue Adirondack chairs to the side porch for now. We had thought about adding an iron railing but I’m not quite sure how well that would work

I would want to transform your house into more of an English Tudor cottage with landscaping to match. That might mean stucco, rough shakes, some strategically placed stone and a wild and rambling garden. Here are some inspirational gardens which would be my focus if I couldn't do anything else to it.

Tudors usually have a variety of finishes e.g. some brick, some stone, some stucco. Yours may have had that originally and the variety was painted out. You could paint the chimney a different colour to make it stand out and be more interesting.

Put some lattice on the full height of the chimney and add some climbing roses or bouganvillea. Would be really beautiful!

You could even put two small pergola-like projections above the windows on either side and train them to go both up and to the sides.
