New member seeking kitchen layout feedback
Comments (9)Thanks all - it is terrific to get feedback from this community of "TKO" folks. Marcolo - I haven't decided if the island will truly be out of the way on the fridge to sink run or if it wil be a hip bumping annoyance, but I hate to lose too much island capacity. Lirio - good thought on the best path for clearing from the DR MArinesgirl - It will be fun to see your kitchen evolve too! We are completely switching up the appliance locations. Currently: the fridge is where the range will be the cooktop is located on the island and the oven/microwave is where the fridge will be This doesn't work for so many reasons.... family members like to contemplate life while standing in front of the fridge, blocking my path; guests like to stand in front of the oven, and if someone is helping clean up as I am cooking we are bumping into each other and I am banging my ankles on the open dishwasher.... Do I sound ready for a new kitchen? We are also, on the advice of our friend/contractor, recessing the fridge 3" into the wall. Green - The garden window is pre-existing. As this is a N facing window in the PNW the extra light from my garden window is a sanity saver in the winter. Your comment will get me to examine what we have planted on the arbor to be sure that we are getting effective green screening in the summer. Thanks all!...See Moreseeking feedbacks on new kitchen layout
Comments (11)Mama goose and Damiarain, thanks for your ideas. I put some structural info on Damiarain's drawing. There is a small attic (not living space) over the hallway and storage area (it's one attic, although I made two rectangles) and the black little squares are posts may be hard to relocate. Post A supports a beam, which runs right under and parallel to the house main ridge. Post B supports the attic floor. I will definitely consult a structural engineer and architect about this renovation. The ceiling slopes down from left to right (7'). One of the "yellow" windows is close (13") to the floor. This window is in good shape and I hope not to retire it before its lifetime. The other can be added anywhere looking out to the deck and woods beyond. The skylight over dining table is my proposal to lighten up the room, which is darkened by the screened porch. I like the design of a long countertop along the exterior wall. The fridge location in this drawing is not ideal though. People will need to walk through the kitchen to access it. Also, I would love to have a walk-in pantry for easy access....See Morekitchen remodel - seeking ideas and feedback
Comments (43)"I can’t remember the last time someone was loading or unloading the dishwasher while someone was prepping or cooking. I usually load after dinner has wrapped up and unload in the morning after it has cycled overnight." Are you the only person in your home? Then you probably won't have an issue with it when you're alone. Just don't run it while you're working in that space b/c it's not pleasant working over a running DW. If you're not the only person in your home, are you saying that every single person never tries to put a dirty dish in the DW while you're prepping? No one ever gets a drink of water or has a snack and tries to put the dirty dishes in the DW? Are you also saying you always unload the DW in the morning before any new dirty dishes are created (including from an evening snack)? You must have very a disciplined family and be very militant about it! I know that neither my DH nor I have time in the morning to unload the DW and since we both get home rather late, either we're finishing up the dishes from the night before or we're finally unloading the DW -- while someone else is preparing that night's dinner. I guess we have very different lives. (It was worse when the kids were still in elementary/middle/high school -- we had even less time!) . This is your Kitchen, we can just advise you of good/best practices and design...what you do with your Kitchen in the end is up to you. At least you're making an informed decision with as much information as possible and, if there are issues later (I hope there aren't for your sake), you won't be taken by surprise. Good luck with your project!....See MoreHelp! Kitchen Remodel Design Feedback!
Comments (15)I like the fridge location. Keeping it on that side makes it much more convenient for anyone entering from the living areas (dark blue lines), and allows a separate clean-up zone (light blue oval). If dishes are kept in the drawers on the island, across from the DW, helpers can load or unload the DW, or gather dishes to set the table, without entering the prep and cooking zones. I don't think there's a problem with the flow between the fridge, sink, and range. I see the point about reversing the swing on the PR door, but that seems a little awkward. I can't read all the notations on the cabinets, but I'd suggest using as many drawer bases as possible. rather than roll-outs; with drawers you don't have to first open a door, then pull-out the shelf....See MoreJessie Miller
