Very high Pony wall for Shower....

Hello everyone,

I am in the process of designing a new bathroom. And I have a question about something I was wanting to do. So I am going to replace the tub/shower combo, with just a stall shower. Due to the configuration of the bathroom, slightly less than half the length of the shower stall will be covered by the vanity. So what I wanted to do was use a pony wall, but I really did not want the standard thing I have seen online, where there is a 4 ft high pony wall, and then glass on top. I would rather the pony wall go up to say 77" which is right around where the shower curtain rod is currently. My builder is a little concerned about the stability of building such a wall, as it can only be anchored on the bottom, and one other side. Are there suggestions for ways of constructing such a wall so it would be strong enough, metal strapping, braces, etc? Pic below for reference. I think I will be using a short shower rod and narrow curtain to cover the remaining enter/exit to the shower. Thanks....

If the ceiling is 15’ are you concerned that the shower could be cold because the steam will go up? We lowered the ceiling above our shower to 8’ and left the rest of the bathroom ceiling at 10’.

And we did install a taller than normal pony wall for more privacy than the typical ones. I just measure from the floor to my shoulders and asked the contractor to build it to that height.

We have a 5 ft pony wall for our shower---it is anchored to the back wall with steel pipe within the frame.

Build an entire wall. Install a transom window into it at the top. But that tall wall will make the room seem smaller and closed in. There’s a reason that a lot of glass has become popular. It’s a design trick to achieve a spacious feeling. A 42” pony wall, topped with glass would be better visually to expand the space.

Look at Command Hooks. They are now making brushed nickel or chrome look, etc. in a few different styles. I wouldn't call them top quality, but they are fine looking and will hold a towel easily. You could put one on the wall nearest the entrance so you can reach out and grab your dry towel. Put it above eye level and it won't be noticeable at all. They won't damage the wall or tile/marble. If you have enough room in your shower, you could put one IN the shower out of reach of the spray. I've had two (to hold wet washcloths to dry before putting in the laundry) in my shower for about 3 years and they seem to do fine in the damp, even direct spray when cleaning the shower.

Call your own shower glass vendor (or more than one) - tell them what you want and get a price from them / measure as it is now and as you would like it to be and get both costs from them including installation - do not go to the builders vendor as they may have an agreement - since your builder is using his own vendor he will get you the cheapest set up. Is it frameless? framed? I would ask builder for photos of what he is planning to install with the measurements and ask him for his price options to make the pony wall narrower with a larger door / opening - discuss with hubby what is the size you want the opening / door to be and work from there.. your builder will probably not give you the price of the glass unless your contract / estimate / bid states materials costs.. I am a plumber and we work on flat rate - we use standard items unless clients want something other and we price on flat rate not time / labor / materials... I am sure you are stressed right now.. it will all work out - if you can live with it the way it is then do so - if not make the changes :-)

Oaktonmom that is a good point, but unfortunately as mentioned in my original post, the other wall opposite the fireplace is not wide enough to put a tv on, that is part of the dilemma with this space.

If you go to the top of this page to the Houzz search bar and type in “tub with ledge” and choose ”in photos” you get many to view. Here is one of them. You will see them with pony walls, with faucets coming off the front of the pony wall, coming out the top of the pony wall and every possible combination.

On the outermost end of the wall, run a piece of all-thread through the top plate of the wall and through the floor. Tighten the nuts and that wall isn't going anywhere.

Thanks everyone so much for your input. I think I will wind up doing something like the enclosed photo. But I will ask the builder about some of the suggestions... I should have mentioned the bathroom has at least 15 foot ceiling.. which is why I wanted the wall to go up so high

I know that this comment is LATE, but maybe it will help someone…. I don’t know how they did it, but I recently assisted with a Holiday Homes Tour. One of the houses that we used for this event (thanks to the builder’s generosity) had EXACTLY the kind of wall you described in the primary bathroom and it was BEAUTIFUL…. I so wish that I had thought to do this during my homes construction…. I DETEST the 4-foot high pony wall in our shower and the view of the shower’s interior every time I walk into the bathroom…. I certainly hope that you were able to implement your vision for that space. ❤️
