Which Rose Sale?
Comments (18)My husband got me some bareroots from the J&P sale for mother's day. I'm in zone 9 so I'm way off the timeframe be planting bareroots. I was nervous if this was hopeless but I really want the roses he bought me. I got 5 big green bareroots in the mail. I soaked them and potted them up. 3 of them are fully leafed out now and the other two are just starting to leaf. I'm really happy with the quality of the plants they sent. I also just received two small plants from heirloom. They are tiny but very healthy looking. I can't wait to see them start to grow. I had a good experience with both of those growers. I also got one rose from the homedepot online sale. That plant came mostly black and is dying as we speak. I won't buy from them again. No matter how cheap....See MoreWhile Waiting for Regan's Fall Sale

Comments (9)Congratulations on both your Coral Reef bloom and those gorgeous Lupines around her! There've been questions about Patty's Plum coming true from seed for a number of years including here on GW forums. http://forums.gardenweb.com/forums/load/calif/msg1213342330577.html In searching the net for Patty's Plum SEEDS they seem to have "disappeared" from vendor sites where they used to be available just a couple of years ago. From everything I've found they do NOT come true. All sales offered that's I've found are either for plants or what are being referred to in UK as "bulbs" which I'm taking to mean bareroot plants. The link to Missouri Botanical Gardens states they do NOT come true from self-seeding and will likely show reversion to natural orange coloration. Don't know if color reversion from selfseeding was known to propagators or vendors in years past but seeds have disappeared from their online sites now offering only plants. They can be propogated by root cuttings. Gardeners would have to be vigilant to deadhead Patty's Purple if they don't want color reversion to orange disrupting possible lovely color schemes they've created. Annual Papaver somniform 'Lauren's Grape' has been suggested as a substitute if retaining purple bloom is desired for garden setting. Comments (66)Pink Traviata does fantastic at nearby rose park .. that one is a beast in alkaline clay, hardy for the past 10 years. I'm putting MULCH FILM (black plastic) to kill grass for a new garden next year, but it takes 6 months to completely kill the grass, to be ready for next spring. Our cold zone zaps roses so small, it's so easy to fit into the garden. My La Reine is 1 foot by 0.5 foot, lots of blooms. My Barcelona (very hardy) is even smaller, like a mini-rose. The blooms of own-root are small too, but they get big after 4 years, if the soil is made loamy. When I first got William Shakespeare 2000, it was so small, and the bloom was 1 inch. !! Now in its 5th year, the bush is much bigger, and the bloom is at least 4 inch, I put tons of gypsum in its planting hole, which helps with zillion petals & also sulfate of potash for potassium....See Moreoursteelers 8B PNW
