Refrigerators: Bosch Linea vs. KitchenAid Architect II
Comments (12)My KA arrived on Tuesday. I love the single door (formerly had a sxs). We are adjusting to the CD as it is smaller, but you can actually see everything in the fridge now. So perhaps there will be no fuzzy green surprises found in the back anymore! You can definitely hear it when the compressor is running, however it is quieter that the old Amana. Keeps food really cold. Crisper drawers seem to be working well. Love the internal water dispenser. Shelf adjustments etc. Still not sure about the freezer on the bottom, but I'm sure it I will adjust. As to price, you've got to negotiate. I got mine for $1700, but I did also buy a DW & will be ordering the rest of my appliances this summer. I'm sure that helped. Do your homework. If they know you are considering online shopping (where the deals are better!) they will work with you as they don't want to lose your business. My sales guy told me I was the most informed customer he'd had in a long time. Knowledge is power!...See MoreBosch vs KitchenAid dishwasher selection
Comments (2)"Recent reviews" of Bosch DWs have always had "some issues" with quality and so also "some recent reviews" of Kitchenaid DW also have "some issues" with quality. Google "kitchenaid + dishwasher + fire" and "kitchenaid + dishwasher + clamp" and see what you get. Then google "Bosch + dishwasher + fire" and compare. The take-away? Several people somewhere are very angry about the poor quality of the products they received (some mad a Bosch, some at KA). Most Bosch and KA DW owners are just fine. So this factor is probably not going to be helpful to your deciding between the KA and Bosch. Those prices look pretty good, especially for the KA. If you can wait until Labor Day weekend, prices might be better. Or not. If memory serves, the KA has a "quickwash" cycle which runs in about 1 hour with most normal cycles taking 2.5 hours. I don't have any direct experience with SHE65 model you are looking at --- I prefer front mounted controls and got and SHE55 model last summer. The Bosch quickwash function takes about 30 minutes and its standard cycles take roughly 1.5 hours. According to Consumer Reports lab tests, both the KA and Bosch do an excellent job at cleaning. In reliablity surveys, Bosch DWs are reportedly a bit more reliable than KA DWs. The KA has an optional heated dry (with a heating element). The BOsch has a higher heat rinse cycle (165F vs 150F for the KA). Supposedly, the Bosch holds 16 dinner place settings while the KA "only" does 15. Best advice on choosing between these DWs that I've seen here at GW: take some of your dishes to the store and see how they load....See MoreKitchenAid Architect ii vs Bosch 800?
Comments (35)KitchenAide like many brands are part of a conglomerate that offers relatively similar products with feature differences at significantly different price points. The conglomerates can sell the brand equity out for a 'fast buck' which unfortunately is common today with everything being so short sighted on the next Wall Street quarterly report with executive bonuses paid based on stock price. KitchenAide mixers are one of the prominent victims of this short sightedness. My old 5qt 300 Watt mixer is ~35 years old and is much better than the newer cheaply constructed ~600Watt ~6qt models of today with their plastic gears and other trade offs. With these conglomerate companies and brands, there are still some "sweet spots" for both price and quality. One particular good stand out was my KA Oven that exceeded all my expectations for cooking quality. It never had a problem the entire time I owned it so, what else is there to say?...See MoreNew Dishwasher: KitchenAid vs Bosch
Comments (46)Just to add a data point, I will never buy KA again. Two years ago, KA actually bought back my top-of-the-line dw at full price because the board kept fritzing out and they couldn't replace it. So, because KA did the right thing, I bought another top-model KA (KDTM404) because I'm naive like that. After one year, the new model stopped cleaning dishes. It's out of mechanical warranty by this time and, not wanting to endure any more of KA's "customer service," I and my engineer dad embarked upon repairs. We narrowed the problem down to the pump assembly and purchased another (over $200) to replace it. Get the dw apart and, surprise, the assembly doesn't fit. It's identical to the old assembly, but something is off. I disassemble the old assembly and discover that the metal impeller in the old pump has shredded itself. So we frankensteined the old assembly to the pump from the new assembly and after a weekend's worth of labor the dw now works again, who knows for how long. None of this answers the question of why a pump in a year-old, very expensive dishwasher would spontaneously self-destruct. No, I do not place auto parts, road gravel, or shrapnel in the dw. It also doesn't answer why KA can't make parts correctly. So no more KA. Ever....See Morebtydrvn
