Since your roof has blue in it, I think you should good with a dark blue. I would do Edgecomb Grey in the eaves. I also think this color would work well with the stone.

Here is a house with brown trim and blue on the siding. Unusual, but attractive.

Love these photos and suggestions. I've been thinking darker blue--I hadn't thought about the eaves being a different color but it's really helpful that you shared that. I've also thought about an even darker blue/green/grey.... Anyhow, even though you can't see the front door--any thoughts? It has tarnished brass pretty hardware on it right now.

I can't see any other color working better with your roof and trim limitations than some shade of blue. White, maybe, but that isn't WOW!

I might mention, the roof appears to have blue tones in the photo but it really is a fairly typical grey roof (varied shades of grey: charcoal, lighter grey, etc....). I've looked at it in many shades of light and it doesn't normally "read" blue. That is something with the light as there perhaps is the slightest blue undertone under some lighting conditions. Not sure if that opens the options in anyone's mind but thought I'd put it out there. THANK YOU again.

Yellow or sage could work if the roof is gray.

too bad you aren't painting the brown. I think you could really go in a diff direction if you did. that brown limits you.

Beth—thank you for your thought and time spent putting this together. Agree with you re: the brown trim limitation. This house has so much trim in places you don’t even see and since we’re selling later this year we decided the investment didn’t pay back. Plus the railing on the back decks is all brown and it’s no-paint metal. Just my first look I love your French Horn accent. Also love the deeper red/burgundy colors, with the reds I let myself worry that the reds while beautiful might not be wise for resale. You‘ve given me much to play with. With gratitude....

Ok change of plans. We’re disliking the chocolate brown trim (I tried) and decided to repaint the trim. We’re selecting new gutters and downspouts and I’m really liking the gutters to be the same olive based tan color of the Anderson window trim. And the roof really is gray not blue. So now I’m thinking a darker olive green based gray for the siding with a new window trim color. I’m interested in more ideas as I’m not set in stone on the color. I do think I want a dark house. We’re in the woods with some nice landscaping and I just want the house to ‘blend’ in to the natural setting. It’s not the most great architecture to begin with so why call attention to the house. Although the high peak on the left side with a front porch in front (can’t see porch in photo) along with front entrance is kind of nice. It’s just the wide one level to the right is boring. Thank you for any input at all. Love the creativity out there.

Your driveway, the timbers and the stone are telling you the house should be stained to match the blackened color of the timbers.

The reddish-brown trim should not keep you from selecting the right colors for the house.

Wow Beverly thank you! One question the timber’s of the house are chocolate brown (not that dark)—the same color as the window trim. It’s hard to tell from pics. Would you darkened the timbers and window trim or just the timber’s And leave the chocolate window trim? The timbers are in the front entrance area. Also since I’m replacing the chocolate brown gutters/downspouts—I was thinking of either matching the Anderson window frames (greenish tan) or going darker with a deep dark brownish bronze color. Hope I can pick your brain one more time. Thx again!!

I do like this image with gray siding best so far,..........frankly, I'm not sure about the brown. However, are you sure the siding has been painted or do you actually have an exterior non transparent stain on the wood? I would not use paint on your siding even if I had to use an opaque stain. Paint will peel, no question.

Your timbers I'm assuming simply aged to that color. If they have a green cast, could it be that algae or moss is on the face of the timbers??

Thanks Beverly! The timbers are actually painted in the same chocolate brown color as the window and roof line trim as well as gutters. And the house is painted wood (been painted several times over the years house circa 1980) although we've only been here two years and inherited the bad peachy sandy beige siding and chocolate brown trim. I agree the darker pic you attached is appealing. Right now I'll be taping up several colors I've picked up. They range from mid toned to darker grays mostly with a green undertone. (I'll post some pics this afternoon.)

And we don't see a choice of keeping the chocolate brown trim if we really want to enhance the appeal of the house. So we really ought to get rid of the chocolate brown trim for good--which will include also replacing the gutters and downspouts to a different color (they need replacing anyhow). I'm attaching a closer image of the timbers in the front door area and one looking in from the driveway to the front deck. After paint, trim and gutter color is chosen, we'll tackle a paint color the front door. It's scary now as it has some sort of faux finish with actual leaves embedded and painted over. Since it's an oversized custom door size we are trying to fix it rather than replacing it. The front door is to the immediate right in the deck pic. The two doors in deck photo lead to the dining room and the other to the kitchen. Will also replace light fixtures. It's always a domino effect major project to redo an exterior but it's sorely needed. Thank you again for your time, interest and sharing of talent.

I prefer any of the darker colors so the trim isn’t so prominent. The large amount of trim so visually makes it seem very busy to me.

Yes Kate agree! just two days ago we’ve made the decision to repaint the brown trim and replace the brown gutters. This red based chocolate brown is just too limiting and ugly. Pick up the darker gray from the stone work for the siding, then perhaps do a dark charcoal gray for the trim/posts. I'd then pick a wow color for the front door, e.g. bright orange or a bright blue.

Thanks you Sabrina. Very helpful. I have been looking at charcoals and grays as I love them. Two things are happening though. 1) when I hold and draw charcoals and grays I get concerned about gray overload given the long expanse of roof thats a mid tone gray 2) the faux pavers that go up to the house put in by previous owner are grey and stone color. the ehile thing just gets gray overload. Now that said green based grays with depth and richness work better. So I’m still playing. Not much time left with contractor ready to go. But it helps with all the Houzz users—like you. Grateful you took the time and interest.

Hello: update: Pretty certain the siding color is selected. PPG Zombie 1010-7. PPG describes it as "dark, cool, onyx black with a charcoal undertone." However, there is a very subtle very dark blue undertone (not overt) in sunlight (which is good as we're in a coastal area--but it definitely is not A BLUE) Otherwise...really reads as PPG description onyx black,/charcoal. Now on to the trim (and eaves and gutters). First photo is the siding selection: PPG Zombie in shade and in the sun lower left corner. Next pic is all the darn front entrance pillars and house trim that I'm challenged with. (Wish the pillars were real wood--but they are just painted.). The chocolate brown you see IS NOT STAYING. Finding the right color for the trim is the second greatest challenge. I am thinking I need a tad lighter charcoal with a brown undertone to tie the back Trex decking I'm stuck with (sandy beige with slightest peach undertone and there are weathered brown metal railings around that deck we're leaving alone--much better brown than the front of the house in the front entrance pic). Or I'd consider trim in something completely different. So much to explore. Weigh if you desire! Thanks. Contractor is waiting! Yikes.
