Need help choosing sofa fabric in a new addition!
I need to furnish an empty family room, with dark hardwood floors, and medium toned gray walls (green-blue undertone). I don't like the wall color, because it's limiting & dreary, but it ties in well with my kitchen colors. I want to stay neutral, because we're going for a modern farmhouse, & I like neutral. We're getting a large sectional. See the pictures below. My sister pasted a light gray sofa & a dark gray sofa into the room, just to see the color. The sofa would be a lot larger than these. I'm not a fan of the dark gray, because the sectional will be so large (5 sections/2 of which are chaise). Light gray or white upholstery would look nice, but I worry about dirt & stains; DH eats & lives on the sofa. Trying to match the walls, so the couch blends, would be hard. The walls look a little greener in the picture then they actually are. The kitchen is on the left. It has bright white cabinets, & black soapstone countertops. I'm considering dark brown leather, but good leather costs twice as much, and my DH doesn't think it would be comfortable. And we plan to get a dog. I guess a dog's nails could puncture & scratch leather. What to do?! Suggestions would be so appreciated!

Comments (19)That is one reason I like (and only have ever gotten) tight back sofas. No adjusting; they don't get out of shape from people leaning against them; no need to vacuum behind them; and they are, IMO, more comfortable because of the stability of them. I also prefer tight-seat sofas for the same reason. Much more comfortable because of the support; food and lint and pencils....can't get underneath them, so they stay clean and are maintenance free. I think they're just a smarter way to go in all ways. As for pillows, the only pillows I ever have on sofas, FYI, are bed pillows, with covers and cases on them. Upholstered pillows can't be cleaned, other than dry cleaned, and I'm sure no one ever does it, yet people lay their heads on them, sleep on them (drool?), lie back on them after a sweaty day at the office....I suspect sofa pillows are among the grosser things in people's homes. Bed pillows with pillow cases, not attractive, and I pull my good sofa pillows out for company, but I can keep them clean, esp. since I rent my house out. I really like that mood sofa and think it's perfect for what you've got going on in that room. I can't be destroyed, misshaped, easily cleaned by wiping it down, and presumably you can get it in different colors. It also has thin arms and back, so it doesn't take up space in a small area with huge roll arms or anything like that. The length you want to look at, btw, is the "inside length". Comments (10)Yes, it certainly CAN work. The throw that you have over the back of the leather sofa unites the two colors. Maybe try to find pillows that have both the leather sofa and the gray(?) sofa colors in them. Some pics shown HERE. Note the two prints that you have above the gray sofa - Here are more prints, but of stormy beach scenes. Look for fabrics/pillows in those tones. 3 years agolast modified: 3 years agoBeverlyFLADeziner Thank you!!! The inspiration rooms you posted are great! I like them better than mine. The last picture is my favorite. I like the 4th one too. I love, love the Atlanta Home creamy room, with the slip covers. But I don't know if cream walls will work with the kitchen. Because of the way the family room ties into the kitchen, and the ceiling beam. See the 2 bottom pictures of our space. Do you just end the cream at the corner? Also, I'm not sure where to find a durable comfortable slip covered sectional. Ugg.
My floor plan is below. I may just have one chair, the one near the window, because it seems tight. The sectionals I'm looking at will just fit. But my end tables can't be wider than 18 inches, because of breakfast bar chairs. I chose this sectional layout because I'm not sure I want to block the picture window, and because we like to put our feet up. What do you think of the layout? The room's main function is TV, but it is the only living room. We also like the rooms I included below; just to show you our style. I need to narrow down to one inspiration room, I know.
