If that's the case, then yes you CAN tile right over it, although it's recommended that you start fresh. The reason being then you don't have to worry about the laminate parting, or "delaminating" from the base underneath. However, if you want to go over what you have, scuff it up good with a sander, and then use some thing like Laticrete's 317 thinset mixed with their 333 liquid latex, or Mapei's Kerabond thinset mixed with their Keralastic additive. You want something strong that's not going to lose its bond, and those are about the two strongest thinsets I know of.

Need advice please. have island 10ft long island x 4ft 2" (50inches)wide. overhang will be 12 inches down the entire 10ft length. have 24"d base cabinets plus another 12"d set of base cabinets back to back. (36 inches of base cabinets that granite will sit on). question is how many support posts will be needed down the 10ft length of overhang ?(14inch overhang) Will one support post on each end be sufficient or do I need 3? can't add metal supports into top of cabinets, not enough space between the cabinet doors and top of cabinets. no room for corbels. support posts are the only option. would like one on each end vs adding one in middle. help!

@enright5 - I know this is a few months after your initial posts, but I came across your posts while I was looking for photos of real life installations of Lyra and Lagoon Silestone. I can total relate to the original post. I love marble too and the look it provides, but it is not a good fit for my family. Knowing this I am not looking to trick people into thinking I have marble - just LOVE the general look and feel. SO what did you finally decide on?

We originally had swivel stools at our last house but unfortunately they began to disintegrate after less than a year which was a shame as we chose them because they had a bit of a bentwood, slightly Parisian look going on that complemented our art nouveau stuff :( I was wary of buying more swivel ones TBH and wanted upholstered stools with studded details but in the UK it seemed surprisingly difficult - or at least it did in 2014 - to find high quality, antique style stools so we opted for non-swivel pewter look, industrial (backless) ones from Wayfair. The consolation being they have a vaguely Arts & Crafts feel! Currently we're sans island (making do with a dresser base!) so are not using them, but overall we're happy with the lack of swivel!
