Ebay sellers
Comments (42)I bought quite a few plants from Vermiculite 1 on ebay last year - her plants are wonderful but her shipping can be slow - but worth waiting for. Hostabargains, bentley gardens and oakcreekgrowers/Casita Azul are very good too. Hostabargains mainly sells small, but very healthy plants, Casita Azul's are larger. Bentley sells divisions, full plants and tc's. (Both Bentley Gardens and Casita Azul [ilovehostas.net] have websites. I have been very happy with my purchases from all three. Clayton3887 on ebay has sent me some very good plants. He makes sure you know the size of the plants from him. Unfortunately, I think I have found HVX in a small number of my other ebay purchases from last year, so I have mainly limited my ebay buys this year to those mentioned above. I hasten to add that there are many good sellers on ebay whose plants don't have HVX. You just have to be careful! Also when you buy from ebay, the size of the plants, or divisions you receive vary wildly. And watch out for the cost of postage and handling - it can add up very quickly. I use my copy of Steve Greene's Hosta Finder to see if any mail order nurseries have the same plant and compare cost/size etc. Tony Avent at PlantDelights has a brilliant catalogue, but his plants are, in my opinion, very over-priced and I have found them to be very unreliable. I spent a lot of money on unusual hostas and about 80% died. This was before I knew about the other wonderful mail order hosta growers, whose names feature regularly on this forum. I thought it could have been the great difference between N. Carolina and Connecticut growing conditions but may be not. I have had very bad luck, in the last 3 or so, with White Flower Farm mail order hostas and, believe it or not, columbines. If they didn't die the first year, they faded away to nothing by second or third year. They, like Plant Delights, are relatively expensive. A big disappointment so I steer clear of them. Those are my experiences. All our gardens are different and what doesn't work in my garden may thrive in yours, and vice versa. Comments (54)Just wanted to add that where I suspect there was a scam (in fact I might even call it fraud) is in regard to Greyhound and insurance. He insurred each chair for $300 and from the sound of it, was assuming I'd make a claim through Greyhound and get reimbursed for the cost of the chair plus have one functional chair. He did not bet on my taking it to a antique furniture restoration store (which I might not have except that I needed to get my dining room chair fixed) and that person telling me that he saw these types of things all the time in insurance claims and said and put in writing that it was clearly not shipping related damage. When I spoke to Paypal they said this is the type of information they look for when handling a dispute. Now my other issue is if I send it back do I insure it (it's my understanding that Greyhound will insure for $300 for no additional cost). There is a page where the cost of the item is declared. For the damaged chair, I want to declare a cost of $0 since I want to prevent him from filing a Greyhound claim on return. FOr the other chair DH and I were discussing 1/2 the cost I paid--about $100....See Moream I the only one afraid of buying from private sellers??
Comments (32)I am also a bit hesitant to buy things or sell things to strangers, although I did sell a futon on CL, but it was a nice lady and she was by herself, so I figured I could take her if I had to!! But, I'm more hesitant to sell a car through the paper than furniture. It really makes me nervous to have someone come and drive my car around - I don't want to really go with them, and I'm afraid they'll drive off with it or wreck it. My husband is not at home regularly in the evenings or on weekends, so we just trade in the car when we need a new one. I feel bad in a way because I know we could get more for it by selling it ourselves....See MoreSeller doesn't want to pay for anything, so far...
Comments (36)"I personally would not cut the seller slack for this being an investment property unless he knew you were a professional investor but you are not." It is not slack, he does not care. Not his problem or concern. He is selling an investment property. "He is selling a home in a residential market and he has to expect most of his buyers are buying as a home." As far as the owner is concerned it is an investment. If you want a cheaper property this is often a good place to look. Investment properties are seldom in perfect condition, rarely have top-of-the-line anything, and are often sold at less than premium prices for this reason. "In my area you do the inspection first, work out any issues and then go to contractÂ" Not the norm in the vast majority of the country. This is mostly a New York and surrounds thing. In most places a contract is negotiated by passing the paperwork back and forth and marking it up and initialing. Once both sides sign without a change it is a VALID contract. In many places a lawyer is not involved until settlement, if at all. NY and some nearby areas seem to be the home of the lawyer for everything RE transactions. Great way to drive up costs. Old houses need work. Unless you have the knowledge to repair them you need very deep pockets....See MoreBunny
