Would anyone care to share pictures of your flower beds?
Comments (6)My favorite magazines are Fine Gardening and (for local info) Chicagoland Gardening. Here's a picture of my side yard from last year...A shady area. Comments (74)rainbow_2007 - Hybrid Musks typically bloom in flushes and typically bloom more heavily in the cooler weather. That said you can (i) deadhead - a giant pain as you might imagine; and (ii) feed heavily - that will get you more frequent flushes - weather cooperating. The intake is really more important than anything else. They need to have the energy to grow new canes/stems on which to bloom. The bushes always look good - even now. They have thousands of small red hips on them in sprays that match the last bloom (which I did not deadhead). I've been using the hips with evergeens in the house all winter. The problem I have with Ballarina and Marjorie Fair is that they overun their bounds inside that particular garden. We just planted three Hybrid Musks around a big stump and will allow them to make a big display rather than trying for control. I'd try to find someone in this zone who grows Cornelia to see if it will behave reasonably politely on a porch railing. Just don't plant Red Cascade! Thanks all for the words of praise. These pictures were taken in May at the beginning of the second season of gardening in NC. About half of the roses came with me from TN, about half I have purchased since. There is an east garden that is mixed colors; two smaller round gardens in mixed colors and the front of the house has 6 red climbers and approximately 6 red bushes. The property border is home to some monsters and once bloomers as well as a lot of other shrubs. I love perennials as well, just trying to get the roses in the ground and companion plants in place. This property has full southern exposure across the front, a shade garden in back and a small side yard on the west side that I guess can be classified as part sun part shade. I have a lot to learn as there is considerable difference in gardening in NC even though the zone is the same as I was in TN. I have ambitions in the direction of having a tea in the rose gardens this spring. Trying to schedule that when the roses are close to peak is a dance with the weather and means I can only give short notice, but I'm going to give it a shot....See MoreFlower Pictures To Share Anyone?
Comments (30)Hi Joni, I'll have to take a photo of the IML 1598 and hoya griffithii to show for comparison. The leaves on 1598 are rather thick and succulent and are also pubescent on the backside. Hoya griffithii leaves are long and narrow with no fuzz and are not as fleshy as those of IML 1598. Griffithii seems to be quite the slow grower where as the sp. India IML 1598 is a rather fast grower. http://www.hoyor.net/en/showspecies.php?id=183 if the link I provided actually works ,take a look at the flower of the TRUE hoya griffithii and compare it with the one I posted above from the hoya that was sold to me as H. griffithii, they look nothing alike. Really there just shouldn't be any mix ups with these 2 as they look nothing alike. They differ so much in appearance that they shouldn't even me mistaken for one another when not in bloom....See MoreIf you already owned your land, would you mind sharing price per sq ft
Comments (28)Virgil said: "More to the point, cost vary due to complexity, quality and frankly, lack of thought resulting in change orders during construction." Exactly. Are you building a basic house with clamshell molding or no molding around the windows, inexpensive carpeting throughout, minimal tile, laminate counters, etc or are you building a top of the line house with 10" crown moldings, 8" baseboard molding, calcutta marble tile in the bathrooms, Sub zero quality appliances, hand scraped hardwood floors throughout, and fireplaces in every room? Are you building in a HCOLA area or in you in a rural area where land and labor are inexpensive? A great example is my house which is custom. If I go with his basic features, which are still very nice, my cost per square foot will be $217 a square foot. Not cheap but it does include granite, tile, wood floors, a pool with hot tub, security system, a Bosch appliance package, tankless water system, semi custom cabinets, Kohler quality fixtures and many other options. However if I add every single option at the maximum price, meaning I decide I can't live without the $50 a square foot tile, or need more expensive wood flooring, the elevator, a full outdoor kitchen, upgraded moldings, a fancier staircase, etc, etc, the price could jump to as high as $279 a square foot. I can go outside my target area to an area that is 5-10 miles from where we're building and can build a house for 1/2 the price per square foot. Same zip code even. So as Virgil is saying, it really means nothing what the square foot price to build is....See Morepopmama (Colorado, USDA z5)
