I am considering this same table and have the same question! Any luck finding out more informatio? Strange to have no reviews. I’m thinking it will need a protective top coat. Spruce is a softer wood, but harder than pine.

I typed a detailed reply and then somehow it would not post and was deleted...ugh!!...will try again.

We have had the table for about 8 months. TBH, we were not thrilled when we first received it. Had I seen it in person, I may not have purchased it. The legs are clearly turned wood and are massive...they are beautiful. The table top is odd. It has a sort of “molded/textured” faux distressed finish. It is difficult to describe, it is unlike any furniture that I have purchased before...it almost does not seem like real wood. The seam where the table opens to add leaves is very noticeable...your eye goes right to it. I like the apron detail on the table...it is bigger than our previous table and the height of our chairs makes it so that you cannot cross your legs at the table...we need a chair with a lower seat height. My husband and I agree that we will like the table better as the finish wears off. We want a truer distressed wood look than the plastic molded feel. I am not careful with the table at all...it is my kitchen workhouse. It sees water spills/dripping veggies, flour spills etc everyday. I like the size and the sturdiness. My kitchen is too narrow for an island, so this is my workstation. It is the perfect height since I am shorter. Water does bead up on the table and I just use a damp or wet sponge with dish soap to clean the table. I don‘t treat it the way I do our formal dining room table. I will submit the photos under a second comment so I don‘t lose my reply again.

hope this helps. I noticed that WS changed the description of the table since I purchased. When I purchased, it was described as 100% wood…spruce. The top clearly is not…the bottom feels plasticky when tap fingernails on it

I wish I had found reviews before I purchased.

You are very welcome. Remember well the busy days of 3 kids…fwiw, the table has raised uneven ridges across the entire top suface, it will make for a frustrating time for anyone trying to do homework neatly.
