Bathrooms Design Dilemma Flooring

Need help with small bathroom remodel

I'm looking to have my hallway bathroom remodeled. The idea is to tile the shower wall and go higher so that the shower head will be on the tiled wall instead of above it. Contractor said going with the tile all way to the roof might be overwhelming given I have high ceilings (9ft).

I'm keeping the vanity and painting it white but replacing the countertop. Its 32 in whereas standard size seems to be 30. I'm also changing the brass faucets and lights and looking to go with bronze. I ordered a framed white mirror which is smaller than the current one.

My dilemma is, I can't decide if I want to do big tiles for both the shower wall and floors or do a bigger subway tile for the shower and big tile for the floor. So far I'm liking Home Depots carrera polished porcelain 12×24 for walls and the matte 6x24 for the floors. I wonder if that might be too overwhelming?

I'm open to suggestions!

I want ease of cleaning so not a lot of grout. I also want to make the bathroom feel bigger and brighter than it currently is. I lean more towards a traditional style if that matters. Also would prefer tile that is not very slippery for the floor.

You are going to want more than 32" for the toilet. 36" is standard (and perhaps even code in some areas???? Not here in Maine but I heard people saying that on other forums...) We have 34" and it feels fine but I dont think I'd want to go much tighter. You could solve that simply by flipping the closet and shower. So, have your shower -rotated 90 degrees and witha glass end wall- at the end of the tub (which is a nice setup you can see in many bathrooms, the tub deck can actually protrude under the shower glass wall and be a ledge or seat in the shower). Then the passageway moves to the left, and you can steal a bit of space from the other closet for the toilet. Either that of have a shorter vanity. 48" isn't a size I'd fight for. It's too short for a double vanity, really (unless you're using one of the new two-faucet 'trough" styles) so why not go down to 42" and have a better toilet area? For resale, though, you should consider a double vanity. Some people I guess expert truly huge ones, like at least 5+' long. But you CAN get smaller ones, Ikea has some great ones for tight spaces. But if you're not selling anytime soon, do what YOU like!! (But I still think you'll want more toilet space...)

Ok, so in order of the pics, we're looking at flooring, acrylic tub surround and marble (granite?) top? Are these all bought? Did you take a picture of these three elements in the same lighting? I ask because lighting is everything in how we perceive colour and on my monitor (which might not render the colours true), these elements aren't cohesive. The surround looks like a cool grey on my screen while the other two skew warm. All three have a pattern as well which usually makes a small space look busy. That said, you have two horizontal applications (counter and floor) and one vertical (surround) so that will affect how we perceive the colours as well. Will you have a glass shower door or a curtain? If a glass shower door, I'd be tempted to find a colour that relates to the surround (I'd pick the lightest of the swirls). If you'll have a curtain and won't see the surround, I'd pick the lightest colour in your countertop. Bringing a sample to the paint store and having them match your element is one easy way to find that colour. (Both Sherwin-Williams and Benjamin Moore have phone apps that can help you identify their closest match colour to a hard surface.) A greige colour is a chameleon colour that skews both warm and cool grey depending on the light and I'd be tempted to look at those. Benjamin Moore's Silver Satin might be a good one to try. I'm in the middle of a bathroom remodel and I can't tell you how many pictures and blogs I've looked at in the last few months, but some key takeaways for me were: - Keep the tile palette fairly neutral and avoid trendy accent tile if you want the remodel to last longer. You can change things up later with paint, fixtures, etc. - If you're using tile for the vanity backsplash, you don't also need the little quartz/marble backsplash. I stayed at an Air BnB where they did this and it looked strange IMO. Wish I had taken a picture. - Consider whether you need a side splash. It can look awkward if it ends in the middle of a wall. You might want it if kids will be using the bathroom though. I can also do a whole thing on mirrors if you're interested. :-)

We renovated recently and removed an old cast iron tub that had been reglazed badly several times - it was tough for our plumbing team to find someone to cut it up and get it down the narrow stairs.. we opted for an acrylic model for our replacement, I absolutely love old things too but definitely appreciate the new pipes that our team was able to run to the new bath as well as a nice level subfloor 😅

Thanks for info. Cut and tape some paper into the tile sizes you are considering. Tape it to the walls or floor. Floor tile is rated for slipperiness: consult the manufacturer's page.

Adding more pattern than you have now will not make this normal size bathroom look bigger. It'd be more effective to aim for a beautiful room with nice, simple finishes and a few carefully chosen accessories with good lighting.

@apple_pie_order any suggestions on colors for the tile and painting the vanity or stick with white on white on white for tile wall, floor, and vanity? I was going to go with bronze for the finishes but wondering if I should do chrome for everything including the light? I was going to do a framed white mirror.

I was considering this look for the wall and floor tile but not sure if I should have the wall tile go all the way to the ceiling.

Wall tile to the ceiling is a cleaner and more finished look, though I can understand your builder not wanting to go that high. You can try to get it within a foot of the ceiling, too though going all the way up in a better look.

As for the vanity, you may keep the one you have. There are really no standard sizes for vanities, tops can be made in any size. What is most important in a vanity is how useful it is for storing the things you need to keep there and have access to. How useful is yours for those who use the room? Do you need more useful storage like drawers?

So be sure about the white-on-white-on-white look, do a search on Houzz for "white small bathrooms" and choose "photos" when it drops down and offers you choices. Look at them until you are sick of them and see how you feel about them. Maybe you will get some ideas for other colors for the vanity, or maybe you will be sure of the white.

For the tile, you are looking for the CoF. or co-efficient of friction, for the tile. Read up on it to decide how safe you want your floor to be.
