How to decorate Mantel

We justed moved into our new build and need ideas how to decorate the mantel. Any thoughts ? I’m going for a farmhouse look even though the tile is more modern. My vision was a pane mirror with a wreath. Any thoughts ? Minus the animals my husband put up.

I like the animals better than a wreath for sure and unless the mirror will reflect something worth seeing twice why not just a nice piece of art and very little on the mantel

I'd do a piece of art with a bit of color ... it can evoke the farmhouse feel

Thank you again for the comments and special thanks to Nosoccermom for the photos. Unfortunately, we are stuck with the tv over the mantel for now. Again, not what I would have chosen, however, it's how the house is wired and DH likes it. As for moving it down, again, we're stuck with it at its current height due to where the electrician placed the boxes. I would have preferred it lower. I agree that no matter what is put on the mantel, it will not disguise the fact that there is a big black screen hanging on the wall.

Our fireplace is LARGE! 6” wide. There is 5” of wall space on both sides. Would love builtins. We are looking for a different mantel and painting the stone is not an option for me. FP is a focal point so don't place people with their back to it. Turn the chairs to face it. Mirrors need to reflect something beautiful or interesting, so replace the ceiling fan with a chandelier if you don't feel comfortable buying art to hang over the mantel. Keep items sitting on the mantel in groups of two or three. Realize that the tricky part of your FP is the fact that it is nearly as tall as the door on the left. Keep additional decor items lower than the top of that door or it will be unbalanced and looming.

Your inspiration picture works because the mantle is quite a bit wider than the firebox, so the balance/proportions are better. Yours is all a tight square. I think editing it a bit will help. You can still have the look you like, of a variety of items, just work on balance — sizes and number of things. The inspo pictures have larger things in the middle, graduating to smaller items on sides. I think if you play around with it, you’ll get it exactly how you like. :) Proportionate— Too boxy and crowded looking for size of fireplace and mantle—

If you're going to go with a mirror, I would personally go with a rounded shape. The fireplace itself is so sharp and straight that a rounded shape would juxtapose nicely. Also, if it's possible (and not too expensive) I'd consider extending the mantle to the edges of the fireplace.

Large art, no mirror. A few accessories of varying heights, and with the tall ceiling, I mean tall. Add some warmth with a large basket to hold throws (since no firewood) next to a chair.

In our last home, I had a sliding three panel wood and copper cover for the TV instead of art. I used a set of three finials for height. Mine were copper patine/verdigris finished and a different company than these.

I agree with art vs a mirror. Mantels look best when simple IMO.

Thanks for all the feedback . The reason why wanted to do a mirror on the fireplace , to the left of it is our stairwell to the basement that is where I wanted to put artwork . Our house is in Colorado we have some view of the mountains were we’re close to them . Thought a different focal point would be better instead of two large artworks closer together. My husband thinks should do artwork piece above fireplace and mirror on stairwell. Here is stairwell.

I agree with the other comment about a round mirror considering you're looking into other places around the house for art. You could also opt for a decorative mirror and a white carpet?
