Hey everybody! We are safe, fed, cool in the great state of Texas! I'm overwhelmed with the goodness of this community. Thank you for all the prayers, thoughts and good JuJu that was sent out to us.

Our friend that we are staying with, in Houston, went to Lake Charles to check on friends, family and to help with tarping roofs, running generators and a whole host of labor intensive tasks. It's pretty horrible. Infastructure is gone and there will be no electricity or water for weeks. But, we will recover and become stronger than ever. I wouldn't want to live anywhere else. The people are good good good!

My children left for safe haven in Austin, Texas and Shrevport, Louisiana. The other one is in Denver, CO. and was worried sick about us. All cell phone services are spotty to say the least. We will not return until we have sevices to our home. My oldest daughter, Maggie and Max's mother, has lost just about everything. Maggie's room is gone and there are massive holes in the roof all over her home. Her husband is locked in at one of the refineries for work. It's just a mess! The children's schools are gone.

OK, enough doom and gloom! We will prevail and will remain safe. Thank you again for all the amazing texts, phone calls and thoughts. I'll come back soon and report more as I know more. Please pray for the people of Louisiana. I know so many that are in need.

May (lowspark) is ok!!! Cindy sent a note but I haven't been able to respond because the service is bad.

We recently had 5 days without power. Some had three weeks. And not all were even in massive storm near the event about to hit our friends in the gulf coast.

Horrid storm season. Be smart and stay safe.

You beat me to it! Karen and Charles have gone to Houston to be with friends. She will stay in touch on Facebook.

CindyMac is in Baton Rouge, 150 miles east of Karen. They are getting tons of tornados warnings and taking shelter at home with the kitties.

We don't do Mardi Gras, but do celebrate Shrove Tuesday (known in the local restaurant trade as "National Pancake Day"). While the kiddoes prefer ordinary buttermilk pancakes with faux maple syrup, they don't seem to realize the concept of "cook's choice", so will be disappointed come supper time. I can't face such sweet fare that late in the day. My plan is to make savoury pancakes with sweet potatoes, topped with a bleu cheese mushroom sauce. My recipe recommended a roasted tomato sauce, but tomatoes are pretty woody and pricey here this time of year.

Second Application of Bayer went down today, staying on the safe side

If you haven't used Scott's Disease ex, give it a try. Price is comparable to the Bayer and works good. I have to spread some more Scott's and I'm like you and kind of resistant of spreading too much fungicides. It's been a moist spring/summer and as much as I love the rain since no irrigation is needed, it has been bringing issues.

I have a compost tumbler. How do I make sure it stays safe in winter?

What exactly are you worried about? Are you worried that the aerobic bacteria you’ve been growing will not survive the winter? It’ll be fine. The colder the microorganisms get the less active they are, and your rate of composting will likely slow way down. But when the winter is over you can return to feeding it (adding components) and it’ll start back up. That said, the bacteria decomposition itself will create heat if you have a sufficient volume of materials. So you can compost through cold weather, but you might need a larger pile to successfully build up heat, and you have to make sure your ratio of components is closer to optimal, with 4 key ingredients being carbon (brown organic materials like sticks, fallen leaves, sawdust, paper products) nitrogen (green organic materials like grass clippings, plant matter, or fruit/vegetable food waste.) water and oxygen.

Glad that Karen made it to Houston - it looks like Lake Charles was hit pretty hard and even had the eye of the storm pass over it last night. Shreveport doesn't look so good right now either.

Baton Rouge will probably have flooding, but not the winds that Lake Charles got, or even that Shreveport is going to get.

I've been through Lake Charles quite a few times and liked it - I always had good food there, as well as in Shreveport.

Happy to report that Karen's new house had very little damage. Phew! Actually as bad as Laura was, it could have hit much, much worse.

Elery been trying to keep track of people for me on Facebook. He said that Karen and her DH were safe in Texas.

I hope Cindy and her husband and kitties stay safe too, this is a dangerous storm.

Mother nature can be nasty....glad you could get out of her fury! There are many in Iowa still without a roof or power almost 3 weeks after the derecho came whistling through with winds of 140 MPH. It's those without the means to have a way to get out or friends to take them in who suffer the most. As Mr Rogers said..."always look to the helpers".
