Its a Motorola V188. :-) My first guess is Elephant Heart and second guess is Satsuma. The top one has a heart shape like EH; Satsumas generally do not have that shape. But the bottom one is not heart-shaped. It looks like they are not quite ripe yet. Where are you? My Satsumas are just ripening now and if you are in the south bay of San Francisco, I think that would rule out Satsuma unless you took the pictures several weeks ago. Elephant Heart ripens later and I think the timing of that one is right. There are many other plums it could be but assuming you are in California these two are very popular so are the most likely red-fleshed plums. Scott

Habit, bark, leaves etc. those of cucumber magnolia and not those of an Asiatic magnolia. While it seems usual for cucumber magnolia to have symmetric fruits (irregular fruits are common among familiar Asiatic magnolias such as star and saucer magnolias) maybe it doesn't, in fact always produce them. The irregularity is due to only part of the seeds developing, each place that a seed forms the fruit bulges so that the rest becomes shrunken-looking. Cucumber magnolia has been crossed with Asiatic magnolias numerous times to produce what is now surely a surfeit of similar garden hybrids. Some of these are quite similar to cucumber magnolia in general appearance, 'Yellow Bird' for instance. Surely, however, most of these hybrids are too recent on the general market for somebody who is not a magnolia collector to have one this large in their yard. Probably you will find the flowers of this tree are colored within the range of cucumber magnolia (greenish-bluish-yellowish or yellow). And those of cucumber magnolia could certainly be described as tulip-shaped.
