How much does it cost to correct a negative slope in the shower stall?

Hi,

We are buying an apartment and since our first visit we noticed that in one of the bathroom showers the water would paddle quite a bit. In the inspection report the inspector wrote "Negative slope noted in the master bathroom shower / water does not drain properly into the direction of the drain." For some reason it looks that this was kind of out of the scope of the inspection and the report does not include an estimate to fix this problem. I find it kind of annoying to have to deal with that every time I shower. So, how much would it cost to fix it? And, what are the consequences of not fixing it (besides the annoyance)? This is in the Miami area.

We can't give you a cost... other than to say it would be significant. We don't know how the shower is made, but typically it's a rip out and redo the entire shower.

Your seller knows about the problem and he also knows the expensive solution is coming out of his hide. Before or during the closing.

Yes, it is on the tub deck that extends into the shower. We spoke with the marble guy today and although he says that they noticed it was not sloping as expected (ie towards the shower floor), it is the responsibility of the carpenter to buld the tub surround with the slope. What I think really stinks is that they did not even mention the slope issue to me during installation and that it's not even level! Shouldn't they be responsible to at least ensure that the slab is installed completely level? The contractor says the marble installers are to blame since the tub surround is built level and the installers can manipulate the pitch by the way they install the slabs. The marble installers are telling me it will cost $900 to fix since they will most likely ruin the slab when they remove it (it's in 4 pieces). What to do?

I am now in touch with the tile installer recommended on John Bridge. Thanks to the information that mongoct provided, I was able to ask him the right questions and he assured me that he uses the Kerdi system,not premixed thinset, the drain that is compatible with the Kerdi system and that he'll use an epoxy grout, if I prefer, but he also uses a portland based cement adhesive. For those of you who raised the point that homeowners should not have to become versed in the correct tile installation procedures, I sincerely agree. Had I not seen examples of water issues due to poor tile installation on GW, I would not have been aware of the potential problems. The contractor who did the two remodels that I saw came highly recommended and neither homeowner has had water issues---yet. The pictured shower is only a month old and the other shower I saw was about 6 months old. I have no idea if either will have problems in the future, but I don't want to take the risk that his manner of installation will create problems for us. The two bathrooms were otherwise beautifully done and the homeowners raved about his work ethic and skills. Although I read about Hydroban & Kerdi on GW, I didn't know that fiberglass would not be a sufficient alternative or that the cement board should also have waterproofing or a vapor barrier. I am so glad that I asked for input from GW! Thanks to each of you who replied to my original post and for the guidance you've given me.

Hello! I just found this very helpful thread in my search for for ideas/caveats for installing an alcove tub in a wet room/shower enclosure (total enclosure dimensions are 5'6" x 5'0", so the tub could be placed on either wall depending on tub length). This is for a guest bathroom which will be used by guests of all ages, including our ageing parents. My mother in law only takes baths, but father in law only showers and has mobility issues so we want to avoid him having to step into a tub to shower. We want to avoid blowing the budget on the tub itself, so want to avoid cast iron (due to cost and weight), and limited space won't allow for the added width of a tub deck for an undermount/drop-in tub. I did come across the American Standard Studio fold over edge acrylic/fiberglass alcove tub (photo attached), which seems like a decent option to allow us to tile the front apron, but it only comes in 60" x 30" (which is OK, but it would be nice to know if there are any workable 5'6" tubs we could consider). As this thread is 3 years old, I'm wondering what the latest recommendations are for the type of tub to use in a wet room and how to waterproof it. Any ideas appreciated!

Tub is different though. You can stand, you can sit down, you don't have the walls so close to you. I sprained my back on the first day of vacation (we often pick exotic places where we explore nature a lot) because their shower in the lodge was too small and narrow. Didn't exactly make for a better vacation lol. Luckily they had some local version of Bengay there..yet still I lost a full day, out of five we had. 26 inch-is less than you're officially required to install a toilet. Of course you know yourself better. At this point. Needs tend to change though. As the time goes by. I'm with Lily'smom.. And I understand, believe me..our construction team also screwed the measurements when framing the tub. Just a little bit..but with a great impact lol. So now we have a much narrower tub than we were supposed to. But at least it won't be a potentially troublesome place. Less comfortable, yes. Less beautiful, yes. But it has a platform around it, and you can choose to sit when you're dizzy or unwell or something. And you can hold onto the edges. Different story.

As Joseph states, there are regulations in the Real Estate business that holds the seller accountable for any/all issues they knew about prior to sale of the property. There is a time limit regarding this type of situation. I would reach out to your realtor to find out what your options are.

Not to scare you but it is quite common to disturb the WALL finish when the shower pan is disturbed. The are both tied together...when one is disturbed the other is disturbed. This is a generalization. We are 'assuming' many things right now. Please post photos as soon as you can.

That would be a huge red flag for me because something is wrong with how the shower was constructed.

I am not a professional but recently finished a remodel and learned quite a bit about showers (and other things) from the helpful professionals on this site.

If the floor of the shower was not constructed properly, it might also mean the rest of the shower was also not constructed properly. I am in Los Angeles and my shower had to inspected three times to ensure that it was constructed properly and completely up to Code.

As others have posted, fixing it is going to be expensive because it would almost certainly mean the entire shower would have to be demolished and then constructed properly. The waterproofing on a shower is all completely integrated between the floors and the walls - the tile is NOT what waterproofs the shower - the waterproofing is in the part behind the tiles that you can't see.
