Welcome to Virginia! I think I have some good news and bad news to offer you with respect to your remedies. First, the bad news: While Virginia has a statutory warranty for new construction, there is none for remodeling projects, so you don't have that as a remedy. Now the (maybe) good news: mechanic's lien law in VA is very complicated. It's not difficult to record a lien, but they are often tossed out unless every "i" has been correctly dotted and every "t" correctly crossed. There is a 30-day rule that requires contractors and suppliers to register with the applicable mechanic's lien agent within 30 days of beginning work in order to preserve their right to file a lien for that work. If you don't have a mechanic's lien agent, then I'm not sure the contractor or any supplier or contractor working for him has any remedy under the Virginia mechanic's lien law. I'm not suggesting you "lawyer up,"nor do I advocate going to court as a remedy, but paying for a 1 hour consultation with a Virginia attorney with a construction law practice would help you understand your rights and those of the contractor. All of the colors that you mentioned are warm, and for that reason, Greek Villa should look nice with them. I suggest two things: go to your SW store and ask what is popular with professional painters. Are they going with off-white shades or are they using the un-tinted white? I could envision that a pure white might have more visual impact, but I don’t know that with any certainty. Also, while you are there, buy a sample of Greek Villa and try it on your house. How does it look at different times of day?

Don't square anything off. The arched window over the door echoes the arched window to the upper right. That mass is asymmetrical. The two arches make it look intentional, give it balance. Without the repeating pattern, you'll have two mismatched windows oddly placed in an asymmetrical mass. The smaller, higher arched windows match. You have an asymmetrical house with good balance. Mess with it and you'll lose the balance. Your landscaping looks uninspired, but it could just be winter, when no landscaping looks inspired. When looking at before and after photos, like the first one you posted, always pay attention to the elements that are not about the house, like house in shade with brownish lawn and dark windows in the before and bright light, green grass, and warm golden light from the windows in the after. The 90s is fine. You house is great. "Updating" and "modernizing" are ways to sell TV shows. Did you know sll the verbiage about openness and "flow" came from HGTV's discovery that men liked to watch sledgehammer scenes? You need a reason to knock down walls other than "it improves the demographics of our viewership".

Wow! Thank you for that mock up-- already looks better :) We are at the early stages but I do not think we "need to" replace windows- we could and do love the big dark colored metal windows look but unclear whether we have room in the budget for that or if we simply paint the windows black. Here are some other photos which we love and are looking to for possible inspiration / options: Black windows against painted hardiboard and stone: light colored if we choose that path- love the hardi shake look: another light color inspo (maybe we need to add some sort of front porch for charm? If we choose to go white, like this look (mixing hardi shake with siding and also pairing with black windows and accents).
