Comments (2)The best climbing rose I have is Reve d'Or. It's an apricot rose, light colored. But it grows fast, blooms a lot and is the most disease resistant rose I have. I have it combined with a clematis that is a darker red color, I can't remember the name off the top of my head. If you don't mind spraying, Don Juan is an excellent very red climber....See MoreBest climbing roses for Pennsylvania
Comments (19)There are many considerations: Cold hardiness is important because many modern roses die back to the ground in PA. Starting over from the ground each year works for a bush, but the whole effect of a climber is lost if it only recovers to four or five feet. William Baffin is a good example of a rose bred to survive the cold. I believe New Dawn is another tough climber. Remember, just because your local nursery sells a rose does not mean it is hardy locally. Disease resistance is also critical. PA is home to many fungal diseases which can ruin the appearance of your rose. It is harder to spray an 8' high rose. Rebloom may be important to you. Many of the tough climbers do not. Some produce a few later blooms. Fragrance is rare in hardy climbers. Very few climbers meet all of these criterion. I have successfully grown Westerland. It thrives here just south of Allentown. It may suffer winter dieback in the coldest areas of PA. It is only "somewhat" resistant to black spot and requires 3-5 fungicide applications per season. Westerland repeats well and is fragrant. I suggest you log onto the Rose Forum and ask the experts. Westerland...See MoreWhat has been your best climbing rose?
Comments (14)birdbite - You know, the beauty and fragrance of a rose are high up there when I look at roses for my garden, but disease resistance is very important too since I do not want to have to spray my roses. I just don't have the time for spraying and don't want to expose me, my family or pets to any of that stuff. I'll fertilize them with banana peels, compost or other organic stuff, but I just don't have time to keep up with a spraying program. That is why I prefer the EarthKind roses and antiques that are very disease resistant. All the roses I have right now are shrub roses - Belinda's Dream, Pink Knockout and Double Knockout. I'm just starting to plant more roses, so the more I learn about the different varieties of antique / climbing roses, the better. ;-)...See MoreBest Climbing Rose
Comments (6)Hey Treetoronto, I live in your area. My first climber is Golden Shower which I planted 2 summers ago. I have just planted this past spring: Golden Showers, Climbing Eden, Swan lake, Crimson cascade and D.A. roses that are classified as climbers such as Thomas Graham, Crown Princess Margarieta, Jude the Obscure, Teasing Georgia and Evelyn. They didn't bloom too much in the first year but looks healthy so far except Swan Lake (first to get blackspot and naked as a babe in mid summer). I regret buying it as I could had chosen Climbing America, Rosanna or Don Juan instead. Yup, impulse buy. I am thinking of adding New Dawn (pink and supposedly healthy) next spring. I am also looking at Jasmina and may add America, Rosanna or Don Juan too. Having said that, I may be pushing my luck because that may be too many climbers in one area. lol. They are a bit close together though, maybe a foot apart but I am looking to fill my fence. I want to see a wall of colours in the summer. I will keep you posted how they do in their second year if that helps....See Moredianela7analabama
