Best Climbing Rose

Hello,

what is the best climbing rose variety, I am looking for one that is a medium pink that I can train over an arbor like structure on my fence. I would love something that blooms profusely!

Hey Treetoronto, I live in your area. My first climber is Golden Shower which I planted 2 summers ago. I have just planted this past spring: Golden Showers, Climbing Eden, Swan lake, Crimson cascade and D.A. roses that are classified as climbers such as Thomas Graham, Crown Princess Margarieta, Jude the Obscure, Teasing Georgia and Evelyn.

They didn't bloom too much in the first year but looks healthy so far except Swan Lake (first to get blackspot and naked as a babe in mid summer). I regret buying it as I could had chosen Climbing America, Rosanna or Don Juan instead. Yup, impulse buy.

I am thinking of adding New Dawn (pink and supposedly healthy) next spring. I am also looking at Jasmina and may add America, Rosanna or Don Juan too.

Having said that, I may be pushing my luck because that may be too many climbers in one area. lol. They are a bit close together though, maybe a foot apart but I am looking to fill my fence. I want to see a wall of colours in the summer.

I will keep you posted how they do in their second year if that helps.

I have an arbor & a pergola (both high traffic , so have to be nearly thornless) that need a disease resistant climber for zone 6. I have been looking at Eden, Jasmina, Nahema, Renae, Zephrine Drouhin, Heritage, Excellenz von Schubert & Laguna. I was thinking Zephrine & Laguna would be too vigorous. I am looking for a rose to grow over the arbor, not eat it. I am leaning towards Eden for the pergola & either Jasmina, Nahema or Renae for the arbor. Any experience with these roses or suggestions? I am feeling a bit overwhemed..lol. Ty in advance

The best climbing rose I have is Reve d'Or. It's an apricot rose, light colored. But it grows fast, blooms a lot and is the most disease resistant rose I have. I have it combined with a clematis that is a darker red color, I can't remember the name off the top of my head. If you don't mind spraying, Don Juan is an excellent very red climber.

FD is new this year and I have her on her own root. No scent that I can detect yet, but truly, I have not bent these old bones down to where she is currently blooming to check and see. Plus, due to our heat and sun, fragrance is a fleeting thing here. The breeder, Burling stated she would get to be about 7 feet. I think she will exceed that. She has just taken off in our surface of the sun heat and she is in full, direct sunlight all day. Burling who bred this rose is about 60 miles south of me and is about 5--10 degrees cooler in the summertime than I am. I am about 5--10 degrees cooler than Las Vegas in the summer, generally, but for most of the summer, we have about the same temps and it doesn't cool off here at night very much, just like where you live. She is healthy and vigorous and I was a bit concerned that her flowers were starting to look a little ugly, (she is still very much a baby). Then today, I saw a Blue Jay attack the flower and eat it! No wonder they are looking a bit scrappy! I have never seen a bird eat flowers before. With this drought, they must be really hungry. Burling breeds her roses for health first and then beauty. I love FD. She is beautiful!

The bit about there being male and female setigeras I've heard before. However, it certainly doesn't agree with what I've seen. It is possible that setigera isn't self-fertile. It is a once-bloomer, being the latest of those that bloom here. It starts in late July, and if the summer is particularly hot and dry, will stop blooming until the fall rains. It supposedly isn't an easy rose to hybridize with, but there are a collection of early 19th century American cultivars. Oh man, that is a blast from the past. I still know that rose as 'The Gift x Sweet Chariot'. I don't know why it wouldn't be a good rose for birds, but who knows where you can get it currently. In New Hampshire, it was definitely a small, mounded rose.

Thanks! I love the look of the EDEN rose. I think I may go with that.

About 15 years ago, we planted 2 climbing roses on our back fence, we killed one trying to transplant it, and the other one is now in full shade and will not die. I have even cut it to the ground, only for it to re-sprout profusely with tons of blooms... And its in full shade!!! I am not sure what rose it is, but it has small bright pink flowers.

Oh, mine doesn't get too much blackspot except near the end of summer. It is one of the last roses to have blackspot.

I only planted my Eden last spring and it looks good so far. Had a few nice blooms (not profusely but it is the first year)and it only got bs near the end of summer. I think it is from the Swan lake beside it. The whole plant is beautiful and the overall impression is soft elegance. It stands out in my cottagey, romantic garden theme. I will see if it survives this year.
