Climbing rose confusion

I’m new to climbing roses and I’m very confused about how to properly prune and train a climbing rose up a post. I have a New Dawn in its 2nd year that I want to train up a pergola. I wrapped the pergola post on black wire fence to give me something to tie to.

The part that is confusing me is what do I keep and tie to the post and what do I prune? I understand that I need to keep the healthy main long canes growing from the base. Do I keep the new main canes that grow too? Or do I prune those off? And what about all the secondary branches that grow off of those main canes? Do I leave those until they’re done blooming and then prune them back to the main canes, or do I tie those to the post too?

Also, I know that with other plants, crossing branches are bad. But it seems inevitable to have criss-crossing branches touching each other with a climbing rose. Is that ok?
