When should I try sprouting passiflora from seed in Zone 9B?

I'm excited to start some passion flower vines (passiflora edulis, "Fredericks") and finally bought seeds which are winter hardy enough to handle the frosts here and also grow the fruit I like most, with occasional die-back. I'm planning to trellis a fence with the vines, for fruit. I believe they are basically a perennial here, but the frost is right on the edge for them.
At any rate, I can start them any time. I know they can take a while to germinate and grow before taking off.
I'm in the California Bay Area, towards Wine Country. Popular out here but everyone I know buys from the nursery, which I didn't because they didn't have the cultivar I wanted.
Should I start the seeds now and plant out in a few months near to our first frost, or should I wait until Spring?
I can start in pots, but really only outside because my house has no light inside, if that matters! I generally try planting almost everything when small because of this, and also my yard is not very big.
