My New Favorite Tomato

My new favorite tomato, which I planted for the first time this year, is Jet Star. It is an oblate (wider than tall which is good for sandwich slices) productive large tomato that is bright red from the surface to the core with no green shoulders, and delicious (definitely not a shipping tomato) with very few of the tomatoes developing blemishes. In contrast, most of the tomatoes from my other large/extra-large tomato varieties, such as Brandy Boy, Big Beef and several of the Mountain series developed multiple cracks in our hot, humid southwest Missouri climate (avg. high is 89 degrees in July and August).

I had not planted Jet Star before because it is an older hybrid and I figured the newer hybrids would be better. I decided to try it because a well known produce farm on the banks of the Susquehanna River in Lancaster County, PA, where I used to live, has grown it as their primary farm market tomato for decades.

I've heard it's a good one. On average, I have better success with OP tomatoes than commercial F1 hybrids, though. Kind of the opposite of the stereotype! But there are some really good comercial F1 hybrids I've found.

Unfortunately, I have tried a number of open pollinated tomatoes, but have not found any that do well here. The cracking and other diseases are so bad that I lose almost all the tomatoes to rot from cracking, BER and diseases before they ripen enough to pick. .

Hi and welcome. Do you know what kind your plants are? I think our resident North Carolinian is Mona. She is a regular poster and will be able to give great advice tailored to your locale. Fertilizers can be made as complex or simple as you want it. As you get more comfortable with your new Plumerias you can always experiment with other fertilizers but for right now I would look for a more forgiving balanced fertilizer such as Osmacote 14-14-14 or use what you have and adjust longer the application schedule AND cut the dosage down by at least half to prevent salt build up in your soil. Leaves turning brown from the bottom of the plant are easily surmised as they are done and the plant no longer has use for them. If it continues past the bottom most leaves then it could be other issues such as too much or too little water. The best thing is be consistent and observe then adjust until you come up with your sweetspot. Good luck.

Hi Carolyn, Are Ox Hearts and Bull's Heart the same tomato? Bue in Italian means "ox" not "bull". ******* Oxheart is just the older name for a heart shaped tomato and you'll find listed, generically, Yellow Oxheart, Red Oxheart and Pink Oxheart. I've grown all those and I do thnk that the more specifically named ones are better tasting. I tend to use the term heart shaped rather than oxheart. Heart shaped ones I like might include; Wes Russian #117 Kosovo Nicky Crain German Red Strawberry Reif Red Heart Anna Russian ....just for starters And thanks for reminding me that bue means ox in Italian. In Spain they're called Toro and as I remember that's a bull. ( smile) I guess one can refer to them in terms of the shape of the heart of almost any cattle, LOL, for it's the shape of the cattle heart that's being referred to. I ended up with a cherry fort - not a maze. The signif other decided to downsize the whole deal... so I ended up with a 10 X 10 area. We were starting with lawn... So I planted a tomato every 6-8 inches. I know inches... I put in: Gajo De Melon Suncherry red star sungold green doctors zebra cherry black cherry snow white Riesentraube OSU Blue Oh heavens, I'll have to go home and check again... there were others... I got a lot of people who wanted to donate seed, so I took them up on them and added them to the 'fort'. I have to take recent pictures, but this is what it looked like early on. I haven't been gung-ho on documenting this because I didn't want to document a complete failure if it happened... :) Then I went back to the original farm (without my camera) this weekend and they have extended their tomato maze - lots more varieties and much bigger this year... I will bring the camera next time I go. Again they told the kids "come back with your basket and belly full." SO cute and SO gets them excited about gardening. I want that!!! I'll take pictures tonight and post them tonight or tomorrow.

This year, the first year, I grew Early Girl, Yellow Pear, Patio, and Husky Cherry Red in 5-gallon buckets. I harvested one ripe tomato from each of the Early Girl and the Patio plants in the last week of May and first Week of June. The Patio produced about 20-25 tomatoes, most of which were unimpressive. The Early Girl has produced and is still producing, but the taste is only somewhat better than the ones at the grocery store. The Yellow Pear and Husky Cherry are both producing ok, considering the EB, pests, beginner learning curve, limited sun, etc. The Yellow Pear is very mild. I don't mind it but I won't grow it next year because the taste isn't my favorite and it is a beast size-wise. The Husky Cherry toms are actually quite tasty, so I might grow one, but it has a hard time with EB. I have one Celebrity that I planted in early June that I haven't harvested from yet. I try to stay with small-fruited prolific varieties because of my limited sun. Next year I'll probably plant Husky Cherry and Celebrity depending on how it does. Based on some of the recommendations here I'd like to try Sun Gold or Sun Sugar. I'm also intrigued by Tumbling Tom.

Don't worry. I'm not making a recommendation. I'm just sharing/musing (not trying to persuade). I realize that different things perform differently in different conditions, and I'm not anti-hybrid.

Have you tried Atkinson or Walter? I think they're probably the most disease-resistant OP varieties I know about; not sure how they perform in practice in hot, humid areas (but some people in such areas like Atkinson, at least; Walter isn't as well known).

Disease isn't the issue we have here much, though, and we probably have different strains than you anyway (I've never noticed a correlation between disease resistance and which tomato plants get diseased in our garden; it seems pretty random). The real problem here is stunting from plant stress from the growing conditions. For some unknown reason, a surprisingly high percent of the commercial F1 hybrids get stunted (same for determinate tomatoes, but I don't usually grow many determinates anyway). I'm still trying to figure out why, but it's not the mere crossing of two varieties that does it: Accidental crosses tend to do really well by comparison. The stunting could be coincidence. Such happens, but it would be a pretty big coincidence.

Hybrids that have done well here include these: Early Girl, Lemon Boy, Husky Cherry Red, Husky Red, Tidy Rose, Early Treat, Big Boy, Valley Girl (sans the early BER), and Celebrity. (So, they don't all get stunted.)

Have you tried a foliar spray of calcium nitrate? (Be sure to where goggles and a mask.) It's supposed to help against BER and be useful for other reasons.

Jetsetter is one of my top 5, and I think it's tastier than Jet Star. The only downside to it being an "older hybrid" is they get harder and harder to find.
