Flooring Design Dilemma Bathrooms

Marble Bathroom Floor or Shower Floor

Despite all the maintenance issues with marble, I am thinking of using it either on the bathroom floor or my shower floor in a new bathroom. Although the bathroom floor is a larger surface area, it won't be constantly wet and can be protected with bath mats, etc. The shower floor is a smaller surface area to maintain and seems to be the more popular choice when doing one or the other. Can anyone provide feedback? Thanks so much.

@stars2723 If your marble is from Arizona Tile, my bet is that it originated in China. Marble is NO problem, if you get the right stuff. I've had marble on both my shower and bathroom floor for over 10 years. There has been NO staining or problems of any sort. However, I bought my stone from a mom and pop store and they are from Italy. So is all the product. Most marble that you will find at a big box or chain store will come from China/Asia. That's the junk. You need to ask where the product originated. Most of the chains can't even tell you that.

We put this in our master ensuite 4yrs ago - same marble on floors, shower walls, niche (not visible), rounded shelves and as baseboard. The shower floor is smaller diamond pattern. No issues to date and still love it.

We put this marble-look tile in the kids' bathroom. Non-slip for wet little feet is amazing.

That's absolutely the first I have heard that about the crackle tile - and I've discussed with 2 tile places, my interior designers who spec'd it, and my contractor. I was told that I'd need to seal it. I don't to do all marble in the shower because it's so porous and I'm not a fan of the marble-look porcelain. Has anyone else heard this about crackle subway tiles? If so, I'd like to know bc I'm getting ready to finalize and order this week.

I Crema de marfil (sp) 12x12 tiles in my master bath. Love the looks of the floor when it was new and still do in some places. IMHO, with vanity chair, kids, dogs, cats, Make up, after shave, etc, it just did not hold up well at all in the heavy traffic areas. My daughter spilled nail polish remover and it ruined an area of the tile. The least expensive quote to repolish 80sf was $650. I'll retile with something more duable for that price than spend it on repolishing every so many years. It may work for some. It did not work for us. But it is pretty. @Amy Perlman I think you may be happier with a quartz that had larger sweeping veins such as callacutta or statuario so i was more similar to the look of your tile. From the photo, the quartz has a creamy background and more of a carrera like delicate veining and they may not work together. I have the same hex tile floors as Emily in two of my bathrooms. I used quartz with veining for the vanity tops. I don't think it competes or looks too busy, but I found a quartz that was the same look and colors as the floors (true white background with blue-grey veins). I'm not sure it would have worked if it was similar. There are so many marble like quartz options and all are intended to look like a specific type of marble. Are you having the tops fabricated/ purchasing a slab? Or are you looking for a top already made for your vanity?

IMO the floors should be the same and your inspiration pic has a very simple stacked wall tile with that floor and that is what I would have done in your shower too I think the 2 patterns will compete with eachother and the dark grout on the walls will make it even more so

Marble-look tile is a much more practical choice -- if you like the look.

Before you decide to go with real marble, please search through this site and see just how many threads exist with serious, serious problems with this material.

I've had it in the past. Polished marble is beautiful but very slippery when your feet are wet.

I found a beautiful "marble look" product I plan to use as well, but would like to use a limited amount of "real" marble which is why I asked about the shower floor versus bathroom floor. Thanks!

Look at the pics and you can see the fake marble actually looks better. Problem is using REAL marble means finding somone that can actually lay it properly. Stay within your budget and dont use products outside of it or outside of your installers ability.

Problem with REAL marble is when you see those showcase pictures in high end homes people dont realize that there is a lot of waste and time put into matching tile to tile. I hate to bash anyones instal but look at the above picture and that is the problem. You can see too many tiles that just look off in shade. This is why most installers have homeowners sign waivers with marble as their is always just that one tile!! But if your paying real marble instal money that can be addressed rather than become an eye sore.

The fake stuff look better most of the time in everyday homes that are used daily.

I agree and much of the marble you see comes from China and a LOT of it is crap. Staining, discoloring, etc. If you absolutely MUST have it, get the stuff from Italy or Greece.....otherwise, there are a LOT of porcelain tiles that don't have those issues and look great....

Thanks! Arizona tile’s marble is mostly from Italy. They have the sources on their product information sheets.

@stars2723 - That's good to know. If it's from Italy and installed and sealed correctly, you should have no problems.
