Design Dilemma living room Home Decorating

Living room dilemma

I moved in about a year ago and I cannot figure out the living room situation. Since the previous owners tore out the wall in between the kitchen and living room I do not know where I would put a television.

Hope this helps. This is my current set up. I am in the process of getting a new couch that is not a sectional. I also do not plan on keeping the computer desk set up. That will be moving into my spare bedroom.

Well, I certainly couldn't have done ANY of this without all of you. I am so happy looking around my new rooms. My favorites: the furniture placement (of course), the art wall, the mantle, the 3 vases on the black tray on the table (although there may be too many flowers in them at the moment), the fabric covered shade in the dining area. the sofa table bookcase, the fireplace screen... I'm going to interrupt myself because now it seems I'm just listing all the changes. It's obviously too hard to pick just 2 or 3 favorites. Theresa, your peonies are gorgeous -- loving the size of those blooms! I hope to follow all of you as you move on to new projects. I consider each one of you a new friend.

I think you'll have a difficult time balancing this furniture, given the super wide doorway to the next room. Personally, I'd move the sofa back, so it faces the fireplace and is viewed as you enter from the adjacent room. Although it may make for difficulty in conversation, I'd move both chairs to the left. For balance, you might try a tall and wide shelving unit on the far right wall. To make it easier, why not "build" something from pieces of cardboard and move it around until it suits you (or not). You may end up wanting a larger piece of art on the wall to the right, or some floating shelving.

I think a slipcover would be a game changer. I saw a bunch on line. But you need to measure the couch and find one that works and fits. Look at wayfair. Didn’t get to it. But I think it said something about slipcovers on sale. Forgive me if I’m mistaken. I also love the rugs Beverly showed. But I feel like wait on one of those until you have the slip cover. If you move the couch to the window the TV should probably face it. I know you probably didn’t even try it because you thought it would be tight... but play around.

Perhaps you can put the chairs as a pair on the big window wall, add a lounge chair opposite the corner walls between the sofa and the pair of chairs. Either keep the matching end tables and get a new cocktail table, or keep the cocktail table and get different matching or non matching end tables. The sofa is so pretty, I would not use any throw pillows, and just put narrow wide pillows, one on each chair. Introduce a color in the lounge chair, add a floor lamp for it and a pretty Chinese stool as an end table for the lounge chair. Simple curtains, with a possible color border on edges and hem that relates to a color in the lounge chair. Just some thoughts. Change out your lamps to a color lamp, either solid or small pattern in a color and white.

Put furniture moving discs under furniture (get from home center). On a sunny day, open curtains/shades/blinds and put your tv in different parts of the room. Where there will not be a glare, put the tv. Determine what your focal point is, which can be a view, a tv, a fireplace, or a piece of art. "Float" your living room arrangement in front of your focal point. Make sure your seating arrangement is intimate, so you can have a comfortable conversation. Place a rug under entire seating arrangement. Add side tables, lamps, and accessories. Put art on walls. Contact us for further help as needed.
